It's time, you guys... Let us all join together with Doomguy in his macho powerwalk towards the final showdown!
So, at first I got stuck trying to figure out what sound to go for with the synth. My usual choices just didn't quite sit well with everything else going on in the song. Eventually I decided to try a new sound using a different synth in combination with a harp.
Also, since the choirs were well received in the previous cover, I decided this one could definitely use the addition of some choirs and strings as well!
I followed closely to the original for the first half or so, and then changed up the lead guitar parts for the second half, while the harp and synth play the original melody that we're all familiar with.
Speaking of which, I don't know what it is about this song, but there's something that sounds familiar. Even though I don't think I ever played any Final DOOM back in the day, I still feel a sense of nostalgia when I hear this particular song.
I also had fun putting together the little "animated" sequences, using the sprites.
Also, my apologies that this took a while to upload. I actually spent around half that time working on a map, in preparation for a special surprise cover later down the line.
Anyways, with another TNT cover down, there's only one more to go, and I think we ALL know what is to come next. As always, I hope you all enjoy the video, and look forward to the upcoming grand finale! ~DAR

So, a bit of a detour here since I really REALLY wanted to try covering this song (plus, the new game is set to release later in April). Also quick disclaimer that these English lyrics may not be 100% 1-to-1 accurate to the original Russian version.
Shoutout and thanks goes out to "Игорюня Play" for suggesting that I do something from the STALKER series. Thanks also goes out to Vilison for lending me his ears and critique as I finished up the audio!
Work on this cover goes hand-in-hand with my recent and ongoing mixing-experiments. In particular, this was great practice for vocal mixing. This is probably the first time that I've mixed vocal tracks straight down the center in the stereo field. This was something I always had a hard time with, since I would treat vocals the way I treated my guitars: double-tracked, panned left and right (to varying degrees). While that approach didn't necessarily sound bad, it did have its shortcomings.
In short, better use of serial compression, reverb and stereo delay send/aux-channels was what I was lacking all this time! I'm very happy with how things wound up turning out!
I really love this track, its rather sorrowful and melancholic, yet also beautiful-sounding. I did my best to stay faithful to the mood of the original. I did change up a few things in the process though. Mainly, I had changed up the vocal harmonies, as well as some of the lyrics.
Speaking of which, I sure had a hell of a time cobbling together the English lyrics used in this cover. While there were a few translations already out there, none really musically fit the vocal melody. So, while referencing these fan-translations and machine-translations, I had to try and make things work musically, and thus had to reinterpret some lyrics. Now, I hardly know any Russian, but I tried my damnedest not to stray too far from what I thought the original meaning of the lyrics were.
Also, I must say, there's this small, silly satisfaction with rolling my R's and just overall singing with my best attempt at a kind of Russian / Eastern-European accent.
Lastly, messing around with the whole stylized lyric video was pretty novel and interesting for me. I quite enjoyed laying out all the lyrics, this is something I'd definitely do again for any possible future vocal covers!
Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed my rendition of Call of Pripyat's credits song! ~DAR

Originally, I had tried adding in guitar parts but it just didn't carry the same kind of mood. So instead, I figured I would try making this like a, "modernized" version of the original. I stuck very close to the original, with some small additions and changes like the bells and the choir (and the drums). I also changed the key, so it's a bit higher in pitch than the original. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the cover! ~DAR

Once more, a cleanup crew of 4 UAC Marines heads in on a search & destroy mission, as well as to survey the carnage.
Slow, tense, methodical, and with lots of tactical nodding.
So, I was feeling in the mood to do a video like this again. Mainly because of how ambient and spooky this track was. I had gotten the audio done fairly quickly, and was already imagining yet another team of marines heading into the level.
I sort of extended things, mainly having the synth string sound come in during the 2nd half, rather right from the start.
I'm also really happy that I got to use my beloved "Sine - Spooky Deep" synth patch that I made a ways back. I forget if I've ever gotten to use it in a cover yet, I feel like I may have.
Ambience and spookiness was the goal here, so I threw in some crackles, just cause. Immediately, I started thinking to myself "what is this, ASMR tingles or something?..." and then, if I had a mirror in front of me, I would've seen the biggest, dumbest grin ever. I went and took my "DAR ASMR" Doom comic reading thing that I did last year, and loaded that in with some reverb, reversed it, and also added other effects. So, feel free to have a giggle now that you all know what those "mysterious whispers" are in the cover.
I actually kept the original general MIDI "seashore" sound, I just added some effects to it to fit the mix. Same with the agogo patch (heard 1:24). However, I changed out the first bit that the agogo had originally played. I threw in a woodblock, and screwed around with some resonant filters (which can be heard at 0:36).
Originally, I was going to go with all normal strings and tremolo strings for the 2nd half. However, it just didn't feel right. So for the higher strings, I threw on some resonant filters, and turned them into these synth-sounding, pad strings. Mainly since I felt like those high notes ringing out, without any modulation, felt a little grating. However, adding these resonant filters really gave it this spooky factor! It almost kind of makes me think of one the battlescape themes from the original XCOM.
Anyways, hope you all enjoy this spooky and ambient addition to the D64D2 soundtrack! Next one's gonna be the opposite, another thrashy and (albeit short) energetic tune! ~DAR

Hey all, sorry this one took a while to get out. I was actually working on Doom 64 for Doom II's Map01, then I had gotten stuck on it, and then later made some progress. Then I soon realized it would be kind of silly to start the D64D2 Marathon with map01's song instead of doing the Main Theme for DOOM 64 first.
So I put Map01 on hold, and then got stuck while working on this one too. Then I decided to let this one sit for a day or two while I tried working on some more material for RED PLANET II (hopefully I'll have the reveal video and a couple of songs ready soon!).
I also spent a lot of time listening to this theme, as well as its 20th anniversary version, along with other renditions of it.
Eventually, after noodling around on the guitar, I came up with the new lead parts! I always enjoy doing harmonies with the leads (its been quite a while since I last did this, I think).
Anyways, man, this song always really takes me back. I never did own DOOM 64, but I remember back when Blockbuster was still a thing, my dad would rent it for me on multiple occasions.
I've also got to say, the guys behind this project did an amazing job recreating DOOM 64's maps. I also found it really neat how they made the intro from DOOM 64 an actual, playable map! Really looking forward to doing the rest of this marathon!
Anyways, I hope you guys all enjoy this first cover of the D64D2 marathon! D64D2's Map01 is sure to be next since I had gotten pretty far with that cover before switching to this one like I said earlier. ~DAR

After a little rest, I'm all charged up and ready to go!
I really enjoyed working on this one. There was just something about this cover that just felt really good. It feels like it sort of draws influence from various songs throughout all of DOOM. I hadn't intended for this one to feel like a throwback, but I guess it works out in the end, considering how close we are to the end of the TNT Marathon.
When I sat down to work on this one, I just really envisioned Doomguy gearing up and going on a brutal power-walk, obliterating everything in his path (sort of like the part at 2:28 now that I think of it).
I followed along closely, while throwing in some new lead parts here and there. I also changed up the rhythm guitar parts in some areas.
Anyways I hope you all enjoy the video! ~DAR
PS: I have absolutely no idea how I managed to dodge that plasma ball at around 1:30!

It was quite tricky trying to decide which track to cover first to start off the Plutonia Marathon. In the end, I just really loved how this song felt, so here we are!
I really loved the combination of harpsichord and bass in this track. However, I felt like this one was in need of a little extra crunch, so I threw in some rhythm guitar parts to accompany the bass.
I wanted to try playing and recording the harpsichord parts, but none of my other harpsichord samples sounded right. So I just decided to keep the original's MIDI harpsichord (don't fix what ain't broke, I suppose). One thing from experimenting with different harpsichord parts did make it in though. It came in the form of a simple, subtle, new piano part that plays during the "chorus" segments.
I also added in some subtle choir parts to play alongside the strings, layering them together a bit in some places.
Then there's the lead guitar parts, oh man, I really enjoyed playing the leads on this one! In particular, I'm quite fond of the new lead guitar part that I made up for the outro.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the cover, and look forward to hearing more! ~DAR
