The Power of the Spirit
We have seen in Genesis that the Spirit is not a person of a “trinity,” but the power of God – God’s spiritual resources. It was by His Spirit that God created the universe and brought light into the world. The scripture explains that the Spirit is the power that gives us the desire to do what is right. It helps us discern between good and evil. And, it guides us along God’s path and gives us the wisdom to do God’s will. In the future, God will judge the world by his Spirit of truth. Do you have God’s spiritual resources?
God’s people over the centuries could chorus, “All we like sheep have gone astray.” Yet the good Shepherd was always there to gather them. He would find and rescue those who had wandered into harms way. And heal the bruised and battered. As the Psalmist wrote of the Lord his Shepherd, “You restore my soul.” But that was not the end of the story. Having been restored it was now the duty and the blessing of believers to recognize the Great Shepherd’s voice, and follow in the teachings of the Messiah our healer. Do you know what they are?
When Christ instructed his disciples in his Sermon on the Mount he gave them a warning. This warning was a reiteration of a warning given by Moses and repeated by many of the apostles. What was the warning? Beware of False Prophets even ones who do miracles! Jeff Patton examines the scriptures to get a complete picture of the danger posed by these wolves who masquerade in sheep’s clothing. Can you spot one? Do you know what their defining characteristic is?

We may feel trapped or enslaved due to circumstances beyond our control. But like our ancient spiritual ancestors we need to consider that God is able to deliver us. Even if we are stuck in a box canyon or dead end, we are not without hope. Paul admonishes us to consider the examples of Israel during their wilderness journey. They had been slaves, but the Lord God had freed them from Egypt and led them into the wilderness. And yet, when they faced challenges, they felt 'boxed-in' and fear overwhelmed them, they quickly reverted to their old ways of thinking and acting that had disastrous results.
God counsel's his people to realize that there are no 'dead ends' for God.
Old? Outdated? Obsolete? Have you been told this lie about the covenant? The writer of the book of Hebrews tells us that long after Christ’s death and resurrection, the first covenant was growing old and was in the process of vanishing, yet it was still in effect. However, Christ came to offer a new, or refreshed covenant, and though it did not replace the old, it did have better promises! What were the better promises of the new covenant that were offered to those who would participate in this covenant that was mediated by Christ and created a family relationship with God the Father?
Hope is a Choice — not mere Optimism
If you were facing the Red Sea on one side and the Egyptian army on the other, what would you be thinking? Many in this moment of fear and dread, 3647 years ago, trapped between the water and the pursuing army, cried that they wanted to return to Egypt. Some had contempt for God and his promises. They’d lost hope and had forgotten so quickly the great miracles that had secured their escape from slavery. God’s advice to his people was to have courage and be like Moses who was faithful. Moses’ faith gave him the hope that God would be true to his promises. This was not mere optimism, but hope that was a deliberate and consistent choice to believe God the maker of the universe. Are you living with this kind of hope?
The bible warns us of false gospels. Could you be conned into believing a false, ineffectual gospel that has been corrupted? Paul was concerned in his day about those who had already bought into the gospel messages of false teachers. Are you believing a counterfeit gospel, a deception that is not the gospel of the kingdom that will lead to eternal life?
The New Covenant writers quoted this book of the bible frequently and Jesus used the teachings from Deuteronomy to help his followers understand his mission and their responsibilities.
So what can this book teach us today, about law and lawlessness, and God's expectations.

"See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” Deuteronomy 4

God’s Creative Force
The power of God’s spirit is first seen in the story of creation. The raw materials of the universe were formed by the spirit from “nothing.” This matter was like a wasteland, void and empty. So God sent his spirit and began the transformation. The spirit hovered over the water, lovingly moving over it as a bird brooding over its young. Then by his spirit, God willed the light into existence. God’s spirit was the projection of his will and power into the physical universe. By his spirit the Creator formed the universe, and renewed the earth for his children. So how does God’s spirit work in the lives of his people?
