Getting Started with the RTL-SDR (Software Defined Radio)
This video is an introduction to the cheap RTL-SDR. The RTL-SDR is a $30 Software Defined radio that packs a lot of functionality.

The first thing you want to do once you get your device is familiarize yourself with the parts.
Different antenna Dipole configurations can be calculated here: http://www.csgnetwork.com/antennaedcalc.html
Next you want to setup your software, so download the SDR Software package from this page:

Once the file is downloaded ,extract its contents and run the rtl-sdr bat file.
This will download the drivers needed to use the RTL-SDR.
Plug in your RTL-SDR, and wait a minute.
Open the new zadig file that was created once you opened that bat.
View- Show all Devices.
Select the "Bulk-In, Interface (Interface 0)" Device
Ensure the correct USB Id is shown: "0BDA 2838 00"
Install the WinUSB driver by clicking the install button.
The Drivers should now be installed, and you can open the SDRSharp Program included in the extracted folder.

In this video we take a FT-60 I bought at hamvention, lookup the pinouts, and use that to create an audio interface for the digirig. With this, we can now use APRS, winlink and other 2m/70cm Digital modes.

In this video, I'm taking my raspberrypi, an rtl-sdr and a baofeng f8-hp and creating an APRS Digipeater and igate for packet radio.
This was a very budget setup, but there are no systems in place in my local area, so I will be running this for the time being.
The video above details the mateirals, and software setup, but I'm using Direwolf for the TNC, and interfacing the Baofeng with an audio cable
straight into the radio. Not the best setup, but it will get the job done.

The FT3D and the FT2D have a function called backtrack. What it does is allow you to store a point in space in your FT3D. Then at any time as your moving around, you can see that point relative to you. So you can see the distance away from it, as well as direction. This may prove to be very helpful during outdoor activities or hikes.

As I settle back into normal life, I've been working on getting back on the air.
I purchased the SB Platinum 1000 TIA Mega from Wolf river coils over at https://www.wolfrivercoils.com/.
After the initial setup, things seem to be working fine, and I can say the antenna is a solid choice for those hams who have limited space for a large antenna.
After cutting up the radials that shipped with the antenna into something manageable on my deck, it has turned into a great apartment living setup.
A few Chokes will help take down some of the noise you may experience with a vertical in an apartment. I picked up 2 of the Palomar Engineers JC-1-1500 over at https://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-017494.

This is a long one, but I wanted to break down everything so even those new to packet radio could understand what is going on. I think it's also important to understand the configuration so that we can adjust it if needed later on.
This is the foundation for everything else we will do packet on this channel.
The installation section covers the install on Linux and Windows. After that, we go into the direwolf.conf file and configure sound devices, as well at PTT. We enable the new FX25 for forward error correction. And then apply some tweaks and optimizations to get you started. Last, we go through troubleshooting various issues you may have.
After this video, you will have a good working TNC that we will use later for APRS, BBS, and TCP/IP over AX25.
