Staff members at US universities voice their support for students who have been persecuted by their campus administration, which has called in local police to violently break up occupations and protests in support of Gaza.
Yesterday, mass arrests took place nationwide, with over 100 detained at USC in California, another 100 at Emerson College in Boston, and dozens on many other campuses.
The number of student occupations has also increased, with UCLA, Ohio State, Northwestern University, George Washington University, and Georgetown all joining the wave of encampments being erected to protest against Israel's genocide in Palestine.
Similar protests have spread to Europe with students at Sciences Po and Sorbonne University. In Greece, students have also taken to the streets for Gaza.

A German school teacher in Berlin punched a Palestinian student in the face for holding up a Palestinian flag. The 61-year-old teacher works at the Ernst-Abbe school in the Neukölln district, which is home to a large Palestinian population.
The student has been suspended, and numerous local newspapers and the police have claimed that the student provoked the assault even though none of the many witnesses there have confirmed this. A parent representative said the violence was initiated by the teacher adding that two weeks ago the teacher threw a student out of class for wearing a necklace with the Palestinian flag. "He told her to put the necklace away. She didn't understand why. He ran after her provocatively when she wanted to go to the bathroom and took her crying to the school administration."
Several schools in the Neukölln district have voiced concern over possible "dances of joy among Arab students" and "expressions of sympathy for Islamist terror" following the operation launched by the Palestinian resistance last weekend. An elementary school principal also announced he would speak to local politicians to consider "how to prepare for this."

We spoke with Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, also known as Mandla Mandela, who joined the Gaza Freedom Flotilla in Istanbul, Türkiye.
Numerous activists from around the world are participating in the Freedom Flotilla as the flotilla prepares to depart for Gaza in a bid to challenge the Israeli blockade.
They are driven by what Mandela always described as the “greatest moral issue of our time,” the Palestinian struggle for freedom.

As the US blockade on Cuba turns 61 years-old, we asked Cubans in Havana what it's like to live under the blockade.
The crippling sanctions on Cuba amount to a siege of the country that has cost its economy an estimated $1 trillion. Despite the US claiming the blockade targets the US government, the blockade means that the Cuban population face severe shortages of simple items like baby formula milk and basic medicines.
Commenting on the U.S. blockade on Cuba in 2019, the UN's Special Rapporteur on Human Rights said it is: “contrary to international law, and inevitably undermines the human rights of their citizens.”

Former US President Donald Trump, who is running in the 2024 US presidential election, plans to ban communists, marxists, and socialists from entering the US. “Using federal law, I will order my government to deny entry to all communists and all marxists.” – Trump recently promised at a right-wing gala in Washington.
Trump has further but unspecified plans on how to deal with the communists already living in the US. “What do we do with the ones that are already here? I think we have to pass a new law for them,” Trump said.
US authorities can deny US citizenship to people who are members of a domestic or foreign Communist Party. “Any immigrant who is or has been a member of or affiliated with the communist or any other totalitarian party, domestic or foreign, is inadmissible.” – according to the US Immigration and citizenship service on their website.

Police have joined anti-austerity protesters in the province of Misiones, Argentina. Officers are now on strike, and Milei's “libertarian” government has had to send federal agents from the capital to try to keep order.
Misiones is a strategic province bordering both Brazil and Paraguay. The protests began as a teachers’ strike against low pay and inflation. The police then refused orders to repress the population and instead joined them, citing their own low pay as the reason.
A police mutiny is illegal, and if it spreads to other regions, it would be a threat to Milei's power. Numerous Latin American countries have seen a coup result from police mutinies, such as Bolivia in 2019 and Ecuador in 2010.
