Mark Mazziotti's Wattle and Daub Tinyhouse at Red Earth Farm
Mark's work is always a revelation. Usually I bump into him at some client's build in Alabama or who knows where building a timber frame or masonry heater for someone else, but this time I got to visit him on his home turf. His new home turf. After a split with his long time partner Mark got a new plot of land at other end of the Red Earth Farm collective where they live with their daughter. He dragged this sweet little building over from their old place and put it up on a new foundation. The building materials have pretty much all been harvested or scrounged from the land. The wattle and fermented local soil and grass daub has proven super durable, almost like a mud felt. Join us as we discuss the building and its future.
My Mud Brother Brian and his dad have been turning cob and bottles and junk and rammed earth into something magic in their back yard while building a timber frame for Brian's new house.

The Casserole Door is an Uncle Mud original that probably other people have come up with also. A $1 thrift store glass baking dish lid that replaces an expensive and time consuming fiddly bit of work to make a batch rocket door. Sculpt a slanted cob lip to set the lid in, let it dry, and you have a closed fire chamber with a bit of a flame view. https://www.unclemud.com/

In spring of 2022 we were invited to Golden Cup Wilderness outside Ukiah California to teach the new stewards of the land how to maintain their straw and clay buildings. Imagine a couple hundred acres of rolling hills and ravines under a canopy of mature madrones and manzanitas and redwoods and oaks. Hidden deep in this magical landscape are amazing glamping and play structures including the cob Sauna I came to work on, a few yurts and cottages, a two story treehouse in a redwood grove, and this super fun glamping dome that I got to stay in.
This glamping dome gave me the perfect opportunity to talk about the architectural principles of The Reveal, including compression and decompression. Please take a look.

In which we report on the latest in a long line of tiny house rocket heater experiments at Wheaton Labs. 4" is too small of an exhaust to get a rocket heater to store enough heat for overnight and still breathe right. That's the short version. The Gamera rocket heater we are installing now was designed for a 5" exhaust so we are revising the pebble bench.
Stay tuned for more.

I met Cat Taylor in early 2018 and visited Cob Hill, walking the land with her. A year later her Natural Building classes have netted a beautiful cob and cedar home and a beautiful bunch of friends who have come together to create it. In this video Cat gives us a tour of the house. https://www.unclemud.com/
