Opening Night at the Vulcan Part 2 - Death of the Reader
We discuss chapters 6-7 of Opening Night, or Night at the Vulcan by Ngaio Marsh. As our murder finally takes place, Detective Inspector Roderick Alleyn finally shows up to solve the murder of Bennington, a crime seemingly copycatting the murder that previously closed the Vulcan Theatre years ago. With only a couple of chapters of clues, can Herds pull through using symbolism as a weapon and take his points? We also speak with Chris Hamilton, President of the Hunters Hill Theatre, about crime fiction’s ties to the theatre, as well as Hunters Hill Theatre’s production of Agatha Christie’s legendary play The Mousetrap.

We discuss the first season of Sherlock produced by the BBC starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock and Watson. Leading the charge in modern enthusiasm in Detective Fiction, this beloved, over-dramatised retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes in the modern day spawned countless debates over whether the absurdity of its plot devices and visuals actually led to a passable show. Revisiting it now, 10 years later, how does it hold up against the stories it pays homage to? With no points on the table it’s all-out criticism as we begin our foray into modern Sherlock Holmes adaptations.

We discuss two films adapted from Seishi Yokomizo's 'The Inugami Curse', both made by Kon Ichikawa, both starring Kōji Ishizaka as Kosuke Kindaichi. Originally adapted in 1976, then remade in 2006, the film follows the inheritance dispute of the powerful Inugami pharmaceutical family. The patriarch passes, and his various wives and their children have their claim to wealth upended by the return of Sukekiyo, a grandson scarred unrecognisable in the second world war. The death of a legal representative draws the attention of the enigmatic Kosuke Kindaichi, who finds both allies and enemies as he tries to prevent the police from imprisoning the wrong person. What changed between the two versions of the film, and how does this Japanese classic hold up?

We discuss Bruce Hamilton's 'Too Much of Water', chapters 5-8. The deaths keep adding up - a child drowned by the pool, and a man found drowned in a bath. Only two suspects have alibis that make them possible suspects, but neither seems a likely culprit, so which way does the finger of blame point? Our unlikely detective Edgar is stuck on a boat with a serial killer, a friend under suspicion, and no clue as to when the killing spree might end. I suppose we might as well plan a concert to keep everyone calm.
We're also joined by Martin Edwards (https://martinedwardsbooks.com/) , chair of The Detection Club, crime fiction historian, and author, to talk about how Bruce Hamilton is one of the genre's 'nearly men (https://doyouwriteunderyourownname.blogspot.com/2020/07/forgotten-book-too-much-of-water.html) ', and the missing link he provides between the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, and the era he wrote in.

We discuss chapters 12-27 of Benjamin Stevenson's 'Everyone on this Train is a Suspect', the second novel in his 'Everyone' series. Alan Royce is on the hunt. He's confident that there's no way Ernest Cunningham has managed to stumble across a second true crime while trying to write the follow up to his previous true crime memoir. As the obviously incompetent forensic crime fiction author goes about trying to shoehorn his first inoperable theory from Ernest to another candidate, another death looms. Ernest is stuck between several rocks and hard places as suspicion is traded around like a scarf. Hang on, wasn't there a scarf by the body in the opening?
We're joined by Dr. Kate Evans of ABC Radio National's 'The Bookshelf' to unravel this book over these three weeks, and also chat with Jack Heath about his latest book, "Kill Your Husbands".
