WHAT DOES PROMISED LAND MEAN? God Identifies The Promised Land As His Land
2. God promised to give a land to His chosen people of destiny the Jews with clearly defined boundaries (Genesis 12:1; 13:15; 15:7, 18-21) to Abraham. He renewed that promise to Abraham's son Isaac (Genesis 26:3-5), to his grandson Jacob (Genesis 28:13), and to their descendants after them forever (Leviticus 25:46; Joshua 14:9; etc.).
Genesis 12:1 The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.
Genesis 13:15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.
Genesis 15:7 He also said to him, “I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.”
Genesis 15:18-21 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants, I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates— 19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”
Genesis 26:3-5 Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham. 4 I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, 5 because Abraham obeyed me and kept my requirements, my commands, my decrees and my laws.
Genesis 28:13 There above it stood the LORD, and he said: “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.
Leviticus 25:46 You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.
Joshua 14:9 So on that day Moses swore to me, "The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly."
Because of all these promises, note how God calls this place on Earth we call Israel - MY LAND!
Leviticus 25:23 ‘The land must not be sold permanently, BECAUSE THE LAND IS MINE and you are but aliens and my tenants.
2 Chronicles 7:20 then I will uproot Israel from my land, which I have given them, and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. I will make it a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples.
Isaiah 14:25 I will crush the Assyrian in MY LAND; on MY MOUNTAINS I will trample him down. His yoke will be taken from MY PEOPLE, and his burden removed from their shoulders.”
Jeremiah 2:7 I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled MY LAND and made MY INHERITANCE detestable.
Jeremiah 16:18 I will repay them double for their wickedness and their sin, because they have defiled MY LAND with the lifeless forms of their vile images and have filled MY INHERITANCE with their detestable idols.”
Ezekiel 38:16 You will advance against MY PEOPLE Israel like a cloud that covers the land. In days to come, O Gog, I will bring you against MY LAND, so that the nations may know me when I show myself holy through you before their eyes.
Joel 3:2 I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will enter into judgment against them concerning my inheritance, my people Israel, for they scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land.

As we open to Colossians 2, we need to learn a practical lesson about how to apply spiritual truths from God's Word to our lives. Pause and think of that word “spiritual”.
Spiritual Warfare.

Spiritual Life.

Does “Spiritual” Sometimes Sound Distant & Hard to Grasp?
This morning we are pondering the shield of faith.
This shield can sound mysterious, mystical, and almost like something imaginary.
Many doctrines in God’s Word can sometimes get that way.
They seem almost unreal, out of reach, and maybe even impossible.
What we can find here in Colossians 2, is a lesson on how we:
Grab & Hold onto Big Doctrines
The challenge of grasping spiritual things is always there.
That may have been part of Paul’s motivation.
Paul wrote to a church that had never met him.
A church that only heard others talk about what Paul said about God.
They were needing help and Paul wrote a letter to them.
That letter is called Colossians.
The Colossians were a group of believers Paul had never met face to face.
In Col. 2:1-7 we have Paul's explanation for how to apply some of these amazing doctrines we find in God’s Word that seems so deep, or so massive we just can’t figure out how to get our arms around them.
Paul said, remember how you were saved?
The Christian life is only an extension of that event.
Going Back to the Starting Point
The secret Paul shared is that we all need to go back to where we began with Christ.

Each of us faces a very dangerous, clever, and powerful foe. He is the smartest, most powerful, and highest of all the angelic creatures God ever made. He is fallen and wants only to damage anything that is attached to God.
Peter here warns us that Satan can devour us. Like a lion, he pounces and swallows us up. Peter knew that from personal experience.
Jesus had warned Peter to watch (be vigilant) and pray in the Garden of Gethsemane using this very same word (gregoreo, “vigilant”) three times (Matthew 26:38, 40, 41). Peter heard, did not obey, and ended up denying Christ three times.
Peter got devoured. If Satan can’t devour us, he also tries to attack us like he did Eve when she listened to the serpent whispering lies, that Paul describes in 2 Cor. 11:3, 13-14 as the “angel of light”.

god's-only-curriculum-for-the-nt-church
Today we spent the whole day driving to the very center of the island of Crete to the vast archaeological ruins of Gortyn. In Roman times, this spot was a thriving city of 100,000 people stretching for miles along the Roman Roads.
It was here that Paul sent his special protege named Titus to start teaching the only curriculum found in the New Testament. In Titus 2 God sent through Paul, a message to Titus that was to be taught to EVERY man both young and old, as well as EVERY woman both young and old. There is no other passage quite like Titus 2 in any Epistle.
I really believe that this curriculum captures what Paul taught in each church as he traveled, but as he headed towards prison and martyrdom, God wanted that curriculum written down and sent out in the Scriptures.
We spend several classes in our Life & Letter of Paul course, that I taught here on Crete--going over those 12 steps for every man, and another 12 steps for every woman.

I believe that we must pause and reflect on the destination of all those travelers from the earth. JESUS DID – HE preached about Hell at the height of His popularity. Look with me at Matthew as Jesus gives the most complete warning in all of God's Word about the eternal horrors of Hell.
In Matthew Jesus explains that life has:
- 2 ENTRANCE GATES – the wide and the small
- 2 ROADS – broad and narrow
- 2 DESTINATIONS – destruction and life
- 2 GROUPS OF TRAVELERS – many and few
- 2 LIFESTYLES – the sayers and the doers
- 2 INEVITABLE ENDS – being thrown into the fire and entering the kingdom of heaven
Then He specifically warns everyone to flee, to avoid at all costs, to do whatever it takes to not end up in the Lake of Fire.
LET’S NOTE HIS WORDS – FOR HE WOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS. He created the measureless universe. He calls the numberless stars by name. He has numbered each of the hairs upon our heads, the days of our lives, and the words we will give an account to Him for.
YES, HE IS QUALIFIED TO SPEAK, AND DOES, WARNING US OF HELL! AND, HE DOES SO 40+ TIMES IN MATTHEW ALONE – LET’S LOOK AT THEM. In fact, get a pen and mark these on paper or in your Bible. WHY? Hell is being lost by our generation as a true doctrine. The respected British theologian John Stott has recently moved away from it as are others. But no matter what men do, if Jesus Christ preached it, so should we.
Matthew 3:7, 10, 12 (John the Baptist Christ's forerunner said) But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 10 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 12 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

Has Jesus laid down some Principles for living around wealth?
The test of our hearts is what our possessions do to our spirits. When we hear of a genuine need in a family, individual, or ministry, what does it do to us?
• Do we start thinking of ways to help?
• To stretch ourselves in such a way as to give more?
• Or does it down deep offend us?
• Do we simmer with resentment at being questioned about what is ours?
Remember what Paul said in Philippians 4?
Philippians 4:11-19 (NKJV) Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. 14 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. 15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. 18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. 19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Contentment Must Become a Learned Way of Life
How do we learn to be content, and then model and teach contentment to our families? One of the best ways to start is to do a study of 1 Timothy 6:6–17, which describes seven principles that promote contentment.

In Jeremiah 15 right here, the book of Jeremiah chapter 15 and verse 16 right here in my Bible, and you can find that in yours, and you should notice how it’s all highlighted. I’ve written in my Bible. This is the key verse for this 52 chapter study and I’ll read it to you. “Your words were found.” Now, the “your” is God and it’s Jeremiah’s speaking. He’s saying, “Your words got were found, and I…” that’s Jeremiah, the author of this book of the Bible. “…I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; for I am called by Your name O LORD of hosts.”
Now look up from your Bibles, this verse summarizes everything we need to know for our Bible study. It’s God’s word. That means we take our Bibles, we search, we underline, we mark, we journal in our journals, but the whole goal is to eat it. “Your words were found, and I ate them.”
Now, do you remember what Jesus said in Matthew? For “man shall not live by bread alone.” Bread, food, food and water just keeps us existing, but that’s not real life. Jesus said that’s just existence. Did you know, most people around you just exist? They have their bread and water, their food, whatever, their coffee, and their big meals, but they’re just existing. The Lord said, if you add this component, “Your words” – God’s word, and you eat it, you digest it, you make it a part of your life.
Look at the middle of verse 16, “And your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart.” Now, stop for a minute from your Bibles and think. Most people are looking for happiness. They’re in a pursuit of happiness. They’re looking everywhere for happiness. Money may not buy happiness, but it sure buys a lot of places to look for it. Do you know what the Creator of our bodies said? The Creator of our soul, of our existence. He said there’s only one way to have true happiness, peace, joy. Right here, “For I am called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts.” The Bible resonates in the hearts of those who know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. This study will just be a very difficult academic exercise if you don’t start by bowing to Jesus Christ. If you’ve never called in the name of the Lord, if you’ve never asked Him to save you, that would be actually the doorway to this Bible study. So, theme verse, chapter 15 of Jeremiah and verse 16 is what we’re looking at as we go through the mechanics.

PRAYER IS REACHING UP TO OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN
In prayer we hold God’s Hand with one of our hands, and point to our struggles, one-by-one with our other hand. Prayer frames our lives with the changeless character of God. Prayer is not so much talking to God as it is talking with God.
Prayer is the only means God left us to make sense of life, that is why it is the only choice we are to make ceaselessly.
Prayer is when we connect the truths we know about God, with the realities we face in life. To start understanding this vital truth more clearly, go back with me to the birthplace of praying ceaselessly: it flows from Christ's command that we pray “in this manner”.
Today we are going to do an interactive study of what God’s character and attributes mean, and how we can reach out and actually hold onto God’s Hand as we walk through life facing each of our daily struggles: Even those struggles that will last for the rest of our lives.
That manner, commanded by Christ is what we commonly know as the Lord’s Prayer. In the model prayer pattern that Jesus taught His disciples, we find seven areas that need attention each time we pray: our focus, surrender, our connection, our cleansing, and so on.
Our connection to God as our Father flows from our new birth when we were connected to God. The more we understand God, the stronger and more useful our side of the connection becomes.
