Vancouver posts record month as home prices rocket higher
Canadian home prices rose in February, driven by a surge in the already-strong Vancouver market, data showed on Monday in the latest sign of a growing divide in the country's real estate sectors.
Prices gained 0.6 percent from January, according to data from the Teranet-National Bank Composite House Price Index, the largest increase for the month of February since the 2008-09 recession.
Compared to a year ago, prices were up 6.5 percent, making for the largest annual increase since January 2012. The index measures price changes for repeat sales of single-family homes.
Although prices climbed on a monthly basis in six of the 11 metropolitan areas covered in the survey, it was the 3.2 percent jump in Vancouver that lifted the overall index, the report said.
Price fluctuations in the other markets essentially canceled each other out, the report said.
It was the fourteenth month in a row that prices in Vancouver have gained, while the region's Real Estate Board said it was the highest selling February on record.

How can dogmatic pro-choicers reconcile their defence of woman’s right to choose, but not of a girl’s right to live?
There is something about aborting a fetus because she is a girl, as opposed to aborting a fetus for any of the other innumerable reasons women decide to terminate a pregnancy, that makes many people — including the staunchest of pro-choice advocates — acutely uncomfortable. Part of it, I think, has to do with the way that we think of the fetus. It is much harder to think of that baby as just a clump of cells when we know that she has a sex — something we obviously can’t ignore when we’re talking about sex-selective abortion.
But more than that, I think what distinguishes sex-selective abortion from abortion for nearly any other reason is that it is driven entirely by who that child is, or will become. Usually when we talk about abortion, the focus is the woman and her choices. In Canada, women can choose to terminate a pregnancy for any reason: some feel they are too young, or too old, or not suitably financially secure, or would prefer to focus on their careers, or simply don’t feel like having a child or being pregnant — now or ever. In all these cases, the woman’s quality of life is the deciding factor, not the baby’s, and there is some consensus that it’s better to end the pregnancy than bring an unwanted child to term. In cases of sex-selective abortion, the decision has nothing to do with the mother’s quality of life, and everything to do with who the mother wants that child to be.

New Nevada Bill Allows Home Invaders to Sue You if You Shoot Them
A man’s home is his castle, or so the saying goes. And people should be able to protect their homes - including our most precious asset, our families - against intruders without fear of a lawsuit.
Some Nevada politicians are trying to change that. They think that you should be financially liable for any injuries they sustain when you defend yourself -- even in your home.
Does that sound convoluted? It is. And, it’s ridiculous. If someone is invading your home, the last thing you should be thinking about is being sued if you use force to defend yourself or your family.
Senate Bill 254 removes the provision in Nevada law protecting people from civil liability when they justifiably use potentially deadly force against a person who is injured or killed while invading their home.
We need YOU to tell them, “I have a right to defend myself against criminals!”
Senators, here’s a thought: Actions have consequences. When a criminal decides to invade someone else’s property, they just might get hurt or killed as a result - and the criminal’s the only one to blame.
Contact your legislators today and tell them you oppose this attempt to value the rights of criminals over the rights of law abiding gun owners.

Yep, you read that right. Nevada politicians want to allow criminals, shot in the act of robbing a home, to sue whoever shot them.
WTF? Senate Bill HB254 is working its way through the Nevada political machine. If passed, the bill will allow criminals … or their surviving family members … shot in the act of robbing a home to sue the homeowner or resident who shoots them.
Nevada law currently protects people in cases of “justifiable homicide” which is defined as:
the killing of a human being in necessary self-defense, or in defense of an occupied habitation, an occupied motor vehicle or person, against one who manifestly intends or endeavors to commit a crime of violence, or against any person or persons who manifestly intend and endeavor, in a violent, riotous, tumultuous or surreptitious manner, to enter the occupied habitation or occupied motor vehicle, of another for the purpose of assaulting or offering personal violence to any person dwelling or being therein.
That wouldn’t change but, the homeowner could wind up losing everything they have in a civil lawsuit. What do you think about this?

California's Prop 47 leads to rise in shoplifting, thefts, criminal activity across state
In a lighted garage on one of San Francisco's busiest streets, a young man in baggy trousers and messy brown hair pulled down his pants. He had been hiding two pairs of stolen jeans with the tags still on them. He handed them to another man waiting nearby, took some money, pulled up his pants and headed back into another store on Market Street — home to the city's high-end designers and big-chain retail shops.
The incident wasn't a one-off. These brazen acts of petty theft and shoplifting are a dangerous and all-too-common consequence of Proposition 47, a referendum passed five years ago that critics say effectively gives shoplifters and addicts the green light to commit crimes as long as the merchandise they steal or the drugs they take are less than $950 in value.
The decision to downgrade theft of property valued below the arbitrary figure from felony to misdemeanor, together with selective enforcement that focuses on more “serious” crimes, has resulted in thieves knowing they can brazenly shoplift and merchants knowing the police will not respond to their complaints, say critics.
