It's paired to an amazing 1440p 15 inch IPS display with freesync, an opto mechanical keyboard. It comes with 16Gb of RAM, and 500Gb of SSD. The chassis is made of black aluminium for the most part, with only the bottom plate being made out of black plastic. It's a hefty laptop, at 2.2 kilograms, and it's a thicc boi, at 26mm. The build quality is really, really good. There is absolutely no flex, or give, on the keyboard, or around it. The branding on the back is nice and minimal, which I like, it gives a classy, professional look, but under the screen, it's a bit too big for my tastes. Tt's got great I/O, with a USB 3.1 gen 2 port, an audio and a microhpone jack on the left side, a full size SD card reader and 2 USB 3.1 ports on the right side, and a USB C 3.2 gen 2 port with video out, an HDMI 2.1 port, a 2.5gigs ethernet jack, and the barrel charger on the back. The display itself is a thing of beauty. First, the 1440p resolution on a 15 inch screen makes sense, even though it might be a bit small for some people. Second, it can go up to a 165hz refresh rate, which makes it an excellent display for gaming. Third, it's freesync compatible, which means no screen tearing. The bezels are alright, except for the bottom one, which is pretty big, but it's a really good panel. Viewing angles are perfect, brightness is really high, and the contrast is quite nice too. It also has plenty of hidden, features, like a complete RSS Feed reader, that you can access by adding a new Feed account in the settings, and you can even use it a chat client for Google Talk, IRC or any app using the XMPP protocol. You also get access to extensions! You can add, for example, sticky notes, or integrate Thunderbird with Nextcloud to upload your large attachments to your storage and send them via a link in the email, you can add a conversation view, you can turn your favorite folders into tabs in the interface, you can add Google calendar support, or even add Exchange support. If you're looking for something that will look right at home on your GNOME desktop, with a simple and easy experience, Geary is what you want. It's very simple, without many options to change how it works0. If you use KDE, you'll probably want to head towards Kmail, which is designed to look right at home on that desktop environment. Kmail can work with Exchange accounts, supports OpenPGP, and you can integrate SPamAssassin or Bogofilter to remove spam. If you want a more complete suite for handling all your productivity needs, Kmail can also integrate with Kontact, which brings in an address book, a calendar, a todo list, RSS feeds, a journaling solution, and some sticky notes. Evolution doesn't get many updates these days, and it looks more at home on a GNOME 2 desktop than on a GNOME 3 one, it's still a pretty useful email application. Evolution will pick up on your dark theme and GTK theme, and you get access to your email, contacts, calendar, tasks, and notes. You can change how things look, with the message panel on the right or the bottom. You also get a ton of preferences to change how you write your email, manage your labels, how the calendar and tasks work, if you want to load external content in HTML emails. Mailspring is a pretty nice email client that you can get from flathub. It can use most email providers, like Gmail, iCloud, GMX, Office 365, or Outlook, and of course independent IMAP accounts. It comes with multiple themes out of the box, including one that looks like Yaru, Ubuntu's theme, and it has a dark theme. It's got a comprehensive set of keyboard shortcuts, including presets, and you can set rules for incoming email, create hmtl signatures, as well as configure a lot of things. Bluemail isn't open source but it still has a Linux version, and it has an interesting approach: treating your inbox as a todo list. It has a small kanban board to let you organize your email as if they were tasks. You just drag them to a column, like Today, Later, or Done, and you've got yourself a little organizer to avoid using another app to convert your actionable emails into tasks. They're also all based on Ubuntu 22.04, so they have the same base repos and packages as that LTS distro, and this base will stay with Mint until 2024, at which point they'll start using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, I'd presume. So, the big update here is the window manager. Muffin is now based on Mutter 3.36, and that brought it much closer to the upstream than previously. This means that a few things have changed in Mint 21 Cinnamon, notably the display settings, which are now backported from GNOME to Cinnamon, and all the display configuration code is now part of Muffin instead of being handled by xrandr. The main change this brings is that you now get a more consistent looking set of apps between applications that use titlebars, and applications that use headerbars. All windows on Cinnamon will now use the GTK theme and shadows to decorate their headerbars or titlebars, which means that the window manager themes are dropped and aren't used anymore. Another change this brings is that GTK antialiasing is now used for all windows, and since it's much crisper than the metacity one, rounded corners should look better on all windows. Window animations are also much improved, and look cleaner and perform better, but here again, you lose some customization, as you can't tune them as much, and you can't create your own, but you still can change the global animation speed. In terms of apps, there's a new thumbnailer app that integrates that lets you preview a lot more file types, like AppImages, ePubs, MP3s, RAW photos, and WebP. The Sticky Notes app gained the ability to duplicate notes. Cinnamon also gets a new process monitor, in the notification tray, that will inform you when automated updates are being applied, and when a timeshift snapshot is currently running. Speaking of timeshift, it's now a default MINT app, and it's maintained by the MINT team. Xviewer, the file viewer, has improved directory browsing, and will now display a smooth slideshow if you keep pressing the right or left arrow, leaving you enough time to preview each image. The Webapp manager also now supports more browsers and more parameters, so you can create your webapps more easily, and how you like them. And finally, the bluetooth utility has been replaced by Blueman. Mint 21 MATE benefits from the same improvements as its cinnamon counterpart: all the apps are also up to date, including timeshift, the sticky notes, the new bluetooth utility, the new system applets, the main menu right click options, basically everything we just discussed. It uses MATE 1.26, which is the latest release, but dates from a year ago, from August 2021. As per MINT 21 XFCE, it's the same story. It uses XFCE 4.16, which dates from December 2020.
