The Supreme Court's blatant abuse of power overruling a lower court on the Alabama congressional map is a clear signal that the court must be reformed immediately. Alabama presented an obvious racially gerrymandered map that was thrown out by a three-judge panel. Two of those three judges were Trump appointees. It was a clear violation of the Voting Rights Act. Sam: Let's talk about what happened with Alabama. I mean it is stunning. and it's stunning the way they did it. it is so blatant. all right just tell us what the ruling to the extent that it was a ruling it was really just like a switch flicked essentially. but tell us what it was. MJS: So are we allowed to curse on this show? That might be helpful. Sam: Here no, I will give you special dispensation. MJS: this decision was [ __ ] up beyond my capacity to explain in the time we have left but I will try. because there is one provision of the voting rights act that remained until last night that was genuinely enforced that the supreme court hadn't got hobbled. And that was its ban on racial gerrymandering. This is a core component of the VRA. so important that when the supreme court last weakened it in the early 80s congress came back and redid the VRA to ensure that this would stand as a bar against racial gerrymandering. When I say racial gerrymandering, what I mean is a state packing as many black voters as possible into a single district. and then distributing the remaining hues throughout a bunch of majority-white districts. so black people can only elect at most one representative.
