PMC Teaches Organic Chem: Lesson 21 - Finishing Chapter 6 (Optimizing Sn1 & Sn2 Reactions)
In this video we finish chapter 6 and our discussion of nucleophilic substitution reactions. We start with solvolysis in Sn1 reactions followed by how the structure of the alkyl halide substrate determines whether Sn1 or Sn2 will occur. After touching on the Hammond-Leffler postulate we take a close look at the effect of the concentration and the strength of the nucleophile on Sn2 reactions, solvent effects in Sn1 and Sn2 reactions, and the nature of the leaving group. We then briefly touch on functional group conversion and we conclude with a few remarks about the unreactivity of vinylic and phenyl halides.
