MASSACHUSETTS — Lines at Registry of Motor Vehicles branches across Massachusetts might get a little longer after July 1.That's when the state's new Work and Family Mobility Act goes into effect, allowing undocumented residents for the first time to get drivers licenses. To prep for a potentially high number of new drivers, the RMV is increasing staffing, service center hours and publishing new materials in 15 languages. For staffing, the RMV will double the number of staffers in vendor-operated call centers to provide information in multiple languages on the new law. The RMV will also double the number of employees at service centers and expand hours to Saturdays and evenings. The state will also "more than double" the number of road test examiners, add temporary test sites and expand road test hours.The state may see the addition of 200,000 new licensed drivers under the law, according to estimates."The Registry of Motor Vehicles has been working hard to implement the Work and Family Mobility Act and stands ready to support new customers as they seek Massachusetts driving credentials," Registrar of Motor Vehicles Colleen Ogilvie said in a news release.SubscribeUnder the law, undocumented state residents will be able to get licensed under the same standards as everyone else, including taking road tests and paying fees. The new law expands the number of documents that can be used to get a driver's license, including foreign passports and consular identification materials.Supporters of the law say it allows residents who are already driving here to do so legally and get insurance.“The implementation of the Work and Family Mobility Act will provide so many long-standing Massachusetts residents, 32BJ members and their families the ability to move about the commonwealth safely and without fear, including many loved ones of 32BJ members,” Chrystel Murrieta Ruiz, Political Coordinator 32BJ SEIU and co-chair of Driving Families Forward, said in a news release.The state Legislatures passed the WFMA in 2022, and later overrode a veto of the law by then-governor Charlie Baker. A coalition led by the state Republican party challenged the law at the ballot in November, but it survived the challenge with about 54 percent electing to keep the law.
