Castlevania: The Red Wizard - Castlevania 1 Hack - NES - Full Longplay No Commentary
Castlevania: The Red Wizard is a Castlevania rom hack that focuses on difficulty. Were you ever playing Castlevania and wished all the enemies were hopped up on Red Bulls and cocaine? Well this rom hack is for you!
All of the enemies' speed have been jacked to the point of absurdity which is where the majority of the difficulty comes from. Sometimes they are also placed in infuriating spots, and sometimes just making to the next place in the level can be confusing.
That's not to say it's bad, you just have to love a high difficulty. The graphical and musical changes are nice and you can tell a lot of work was put into this.
Hack source and details below
Every year for Halloween I like to play me some early Castlevania. This year, I played Ultimate Castlevania, a rom hack of the first game for the NES.
This is an excellent rom hack with variety and depth. The author includes several patch files for different difficulty modes and main character graphics. I chose Skin C for this playthrough. This hack even includes a remastered high quality digital manual in the style of the original game - nice touch!
First thing you'll notice are the graphical changes. They are very good at improving and changing the general look of things, while still invoking the feeling of the original game.
Ultimate Castlevania also re-balances the game. The game now slopes in difficulty much more evenly and get very difficult near the end. Hearts are also less plentiful, so you'll use them with more strategy.
There are many other changes, such as candle and sub-weapon placements, so I encourage you to read about this hack in full detail at it's source link below.

We go to Iluk and find the old man who has info on the Red Dragon cave. Seems he's lost his "Spirit of the Rain Cloud." Luckily, we happen to pick something just like that up at the thieve's market in Reza, fancy that.
The old man informs us the entrance to the cave is blocked by a pesky lava flow. Luckily just a house up someone is working on a hot air balloon that will be finished very shortly.
After some wandering around, meeting up with Ramus to see how he's fared, some bad singing, we talk to the guy making the balloon and it appears he's finally close to done, but needs a favor, of course.
It appears he needs some sinewy veins from some plant monsters we've been fighting the whole episode to finish the work.
So we go fight and get them, and are now prepared to go further in our journey.
