Breville BES870XL Barista Express, Internal Cleaning Process
A short video showing my internal cleaning procedure for the Breville BES870XL Barista Express espresso machine.
The machine has an internal "Clean Me" light that comes on after some number of extractions, or about 2 weeks with my usage pattern. Now I run ~3 double shots a day and I also run one single shot of water through the machine each time before I pull the double shot to warm up the group head. So that may be getting counted as 3 shots as apparently the internal "Clean Me" counter is set to something like 200 (shots?).
To clean it you use a single shot porta-filter with a rubber piece fit inside to block off the water flow and to hold a cleaning tablet. Hot water is then pumped out and it recirculates through the group set to clean it out.
The cleaning cycle is automated and takes 10 minutes or so to complete and automatically resets the "Clean Me" light. Beyond that, it is recommended to descale the machine every month or so and replace the internal charcoal water filter every 2 months.
To help me track those intervals, I use the built-in cleaning light along with a simple fridge magnet. I'm part Norwegian so an "Uff-Da" magnet seemed appropriate. But any 4 sided magnet would work. I turn the magnet a quarter turn each time I do a clean cycle. When it ends up upside down, I do a descaling cycle. And when it ends up right side up, I also change the water filter.
I used the Breville-supplied consumables initially but then replaced those with some generic parts based upon some reviews I found on-line.

Cost of these items is a factor to consider, as you'll be using about 25 tablets and 6 filters per year. So with Breville branded items, that is over $70/year. With the generic items, cost is under $12/year.
One nice thing I like with the "Clean Me" light is it still lets me use the machine, it's just simple idiot light. The other day, it came on, but I was busy and didn't have time to run the cleaning cycle that day. But I remembered and did it the next morning.
After running the clean cycle is a good time to wipe down the outside of the machine, not shown in this video. I find the cleaning cycle splatters the cleaning solution around much more than a regular extraction cycle. So if you clean the outside surfaces first, you'll probably have to do it again afterwards:

Making body mount brackets for a 1996 Toyota 4Runner.
This is one of the products I designed and my company makes. When the 3rd generation Toyota 4Runner was introduced in 1996, the word on the street was that it couldn't have a body lift installed because of the missing body mounts.
Simple solution was a make an add-on body mount bracket to make up for the missing factory part and then treat the '96 4Runner just like any other vehicle. And that's just what we did.
We can make these for stock height vehicles and all the way up to a 3" body lift. The brackets can be bolted in place with self-tapping bolts or they can be welded in place like the factory mounts are.

A follow-up video to show the operation of the AC Panel Meter installed on my Tenma 72-1098 AC Power Supply.
This meter has a main screen that displays voltage, current, power and accumulated energy. It also has a single button that controls a number of additional features.
First is it turns the back light on and off. This setting is retained.
Second is there's a built-in power limit alarm that can be set anywhere from 0.1 up to 22.0KW to sound an alarm if that power limit is exceeded. I set mine to 0.8KW (800W) to alarm if I'm getting close to the 7A current limit on the power supply. Alarm feature demonstrated in this video:

Third feature is the accumulated energy reading can be reset by a long press until the "energy" reading flashes, then a short press. The accumulated energy reading is retained and reads up to 9999Wh then reads up to 9999KWh which is the maximum reading.
This panel meter is also rated for use on 220/240V systems.

After close to 3 weeks of fairly constant rain, local creek levels are rising. This has been an atmospheric river storm.
The USGS flow gauge for the incoming creek was around 1000 CFS (28 cu.m/s). The main stream channel only has height gauge information and that's not converted to flow, but it's probably a few thousand CFS.
Local bike trails run along many of the stream channels and where the trail crosses under roads and train tracks, the bike trails routinely flood. I've not had a chance to venture down stream to observe the flooding this time around.

For this lamp, I decided to try a 10W PAR30 LED bulb and I really like the results.
This bulb is taller than a normal light bulb, so required a half sheet tall shade. I made the first one out of white copier paper, that gives a little bit of texture when back lit. At the end of the video, I put on a shade made of Mylar inkjet photo paper and that has a non-textured appearance. You could also use a more heavily textured art paper if you wanted a different look.
The Ecosmart 10W LED seems to consume a bit over its 10W rating, although my Kill-a-Watt meter reads a bit high on the low power range. Dimming is excellent, no flicker or buzzing at all. I like this bulb in my office, the dim setting works well for general use and on high, there is plenty of light for paperwork.
If you wanted to do an LED conversion but did not want to use a top shade, you could always install a 10W+ flat high-power LED and driver on the bottom of the reflector. You may need to install a heat sink and/or small cooling fan on the higher wattage LEDs. An LED like that would give no down lighting, so the center translucent part of the lamp would be dark.
Before: 300W, after: 10W, or a 97% energy consumption reduction!

die-holder-handle-upgrade
Upgrading the handles on an old tap and die set.
I have 2 of these carbon steel tap and die sets, metric and SAE, that are around 40 years old. I mainly use these for chasing threads on bolts and nuts. This is the only die holder I have that fits these smaller round dies. I could buy a new die holder but why not fix up the one I have.
I did purchase a new tap wrench and have fixed up the handles on it with some heat shrink tubing. So I'm not worried about that handles on the tap wrenches that came with this kit.

Sharing some lessons learned from running a tubeless tire conversion on the monster cross bicycle.
This was my first time in 6 years of tubeless riding that I've needed to add sealant while on a ride. As long as you have a small bottle of sealant and a valve core remover, it's fairly easy to do. However, it's even easier to do at home before you head out on a ride, so that is the preferred method!
In 6700 mi. / 15,000 km of riding tubeless, I've had one nail puncture that wouldn't seal and then this bead leak due to lack of sealant.
Lessons learned are:
1. Carry a small bottle of tire sealant and a valve core remover
2. Add sealant to tire if it needs more air than usual
3. If 1 tire needs sealant, the other tire probably does as well

First look at a Raspberry Pi 2, Model B.
So as my luck would have it, a few weeks after purchasing my first RPi model B+, I find out there is a new Raspberry Pi 2 model B available. Since it is the same price and has more memory and a quad core CPU, I figured I might get a couple of those to finish up my "Smart TV" conversion projects.
I had initially set the model B+ up on my old Sony Bravia TV, but I later hijacked that one for my analog TV conversion. Since I had to do more customizations on that Kodi version, I decided to keep it as-is and build a new unit for my Sony TV.
I also have an old Westinghouse LCD TV in my office that could use some "smarts" as well. I can run Kodi on my office PC, but I think having a dedicated RPi/Kodi box would be a better solution.

Out with the old, in with the new, or is it the other way around?
The old Edison screw base socket predates the bi-pole halogen bulb by many decades. In any event, the idea is to remove the high power halogen bulb socket and replace it with a simple Edison socket.
Be sure to unplug the lamp prior to working on it for safety. And if the lamp was on, be sure to allow time for the halogen bulb to cool, they can get extremely hot in operation.
I used a replacement socket from the local hardware store. Pick one that has some sort of provision for a mounting tab. Some will have a large threaded hole in the bottom for screwing onto a hollow tube, you don't want that kind. This one on Amazon is similar to what I used:

On other lamp conversions I've done, the mounting tab bent easily over flat. But this socket the tab was very stiff and ended up breaking off. So I just cut a thin strip of sheet metal to fit into the slot that the tab is in. I drilled a hole in one end and slipped the new tab under the original one to hold it in place.
Then mark and drill a new hole in the new tab to place the socket dead center in the reflector. Screw it down, and hook up the two wires and the conversion is done.
Time to test it out. Some of these lamps had simple on/off rotary switches, others, like this one had 3-position dimmer switches and others had infinitely adjustable dimmers. I found on some of my old Torchiere lamps, the dimmers failed due to the 300W-500W load.
How you proceed with the switch depends on if it still works and if it works with your chosen bulb. Options are use the switch as-is, replace with a simple on/off switch or just tie the two switch wires together and use a switched outlet to control the lamp. I've done all 3 in the last and all have worked.
The switches are typically located in the middle at a threaded coupling on the pole. Unscrew the pole to access the switch if needed.
