Keeping it Real - Ep 10: Kayaking Around Garden Island Ships Graveyard
I took my Advanced Elements Advanced Frame Kayak around the Garden Island Ships Graveyard today. It's a mainly exposed graveyard of ships, some of which date back over 150 years in age. They include the Santiago, which is a wreck of some historical significance given it still has a hull that is largely intact and one of the oldest of it's kind you can access. Also in the graveyard is the Dorothy H Sterling, a wooden wreck that has been largely reclaimed by mangroves and is the largest wreck in the graveyard. There is a large accumulation of wrecks near the causeway that leads to Garden Island.
The kayak itself is hybrid in design and goes up and down easily. These compact kayaks are easily transportable and can be stored in a small space. I've previously done a review on it on our other channel.
Happy to answer any questions about it. I actually would like to test some more of kayaks in the Advanced Elements range down the track they are so good.

As you know, I've recently found myself getting back into a bit of indoor rock climbing as I've been introducing someone to the sport (it may suit them more than me). The next logical step is to take it outdoors but in order to be able to do that we have to go through a process of learning about the local climbing areas and how to set up anchor systems for top roping. I will deal with the later in a later video but as to the former, there are a number of good places to climb in South Australia but the most well known are the various crags within Morialta Conservation Park and out of those Far Crag is probably the most used.
I've hiked in Morialta a lot over the years and there are two other things on the channel on it. However most people walk past the climbing areas without even giving them a second thought. All they know is that there are rocky outcrops within the park. In this video I hike specifically with the intention of finding the fastest way to Far Crag from within the park (most climbers access it from Norton Summit Road above the park).

I haven't done one of these types of videos before but during a good glass of white wine last night it seemed like a good idea so here is my first movie synopsis (and in this case recommendation) that I am going to share with you. Logan's Run (1976) starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter and a host of other familiar faces making appearances. Based on a 1967 science fiction novel it depicts a utopian future society where everyone seems to be happy but things are just a bit too good to be true. It's a thought provoking movie that is worth watching for those who haven't.

Believe it or not, despite camping regularly for my entire life, I have never owned or slept in a swag. Given that I no longer have a lightweight hiking tent I set out to find a replacement and thought I would give this Wanderer Compact Tourer Swag a go. It's designed for one person and even then it's pretty snug but it fared pretty well during this overnight test in my front yard in the middle of the South Australian winter.
As you will see I also enjoyed some Pinot Noir Chardonnay from Jacobs Creek Winery before turning in for the night (I can see a tradition forming here with some of these Vlog videos involving local wines)!

I used to climb quite a bit but for health reasons thought it would no longer be possible. However after 15 years being inactive I recently started again and found that it may actually be helpful in moderation for my condition (which is an inflammatory auto immune illness).
Vertical Reality is an indoor rock climbing gym in the Adelaide area which is well run, good value for money and with a lot walls (so it can accommodate quite a lot of climbers of all abilities). It's a great workout and a lot of fun.

Cycling is one of those activities that you can literally do from your front door with little fluffing around. There are a number of local rides I do that don't involve having to load my bike on to my car. This is a local block in an industrial area that feels safe even when it gets dark. Thought I would take you for a lap of it.

I won't lie, for someone who has spent their whole life being active, the last 12 months it's been less than healthy. Poor drinking and eating habits and exercise that I would describe as token at best. In the last 2 weeks I've started trying to get my act together again and riding on my Smart Trainer on Zwift used to be a big part of that and I'm trying to make it that way again.
What is Zwift? Well this video is a bit of an introduction into it. It is essentially an app for cyclists and runners. But it's more than that. It's a fully immersive experience in a virtual world while you're doing it. That could mean just going for a casual ride, undertaking any number of solo challenges, taking part in exercise sessions, racing others or doing time trials against the clock. There are so many options. You just put your bike on your smart trainer and transport yourself to virtual environments such as the island of Watopia (the fictional island I used in this video) or recreations of places like New York or London (both with a fair bit of fictitious stuff thrown in mind you).
To be clear, I don't advocate replacing your outdoors riding with Zwift. Not at all. It is definitely preferable to ride in the real world, but when weather or circumstances make it difficult, the convenience of Zwift is a good alternative to stay fit so you can enjoy your outdoors cycling (or running) more when you can do it.
There is also some footage of me struggling on a real hill in South Australia on zero training! I can't say I enjoyed that but you can have a laugh at my expense.
If you like this video let and want to see me punishing myself more on a bike (indoors or outdoors) on the Vlog, let me know.

There is a whole series of long form videos on our channel on my boat and if you are interested I would recommend you watch that series. Sailing and working on it has been one of my little joys in the last 12 months while so many other things about the world seem to have been turned upside down. I get out on it when I can and it helps me keep things real.

In this video I explain my outdoor philosophy when it comes to clothing and equipment. Essentially I try and keep as much as possible 'idiot proof'. If it can fail (in anything other than perfect circumstances) then sooner or later it will fail so I try and avoid using such things in anything other than perfect circumstances.

I won't lie, I am not nearly as interested in gardening as I am so other outdoor activities. However many people swear by it as being a great activity to reduce stress and it just to happened that yesterday we had a nice weather here so I got stuck into doing some work on mine. I capped off the day with a nice bottle of 2020 Chardonnay from a local winery in the Adelaide Hills called Sidewood.
