Initiated in 2021, the Bayraktar TB3's development sought to enhance the blueprint of the TB2, resulting in a slightly larger iteration equipped with components tailored for ship-based deployments, including a collapsible wing and arresting hook.
Compared to its predecessor, the TB3 showcases double the launch weight and payload capabilities, potentially enabling a broader range of tools and armaments, thereby expanding its operational capacity. The Technical Director of Turkey’s Baykar Group, Selcuk Bayraktar, further solidified this achievement with photographs released on March 27, 2023, showcasing the culmination of the inaugural flight prototype for the Bayraktar TB3 reconnaissance-strike UAV.
Developed by Baykar, a Turkish defense company, the Bayraktar TB3 is a tactical drone designed for surveillance, reconnaissance, and combat missions. It boasts a wingspan of 12 meters and a length of 6.5 meters, placing it in the medium-sized UAV category.
Technically, the TB3 is equipped with advanced avionics and sensor systems, including electro-optical and infrared cameras, as well as synthetic aperture radar, enabling real-time intelligence gathering, target detection, and precision strikes.
Regarding its capabilities, the operational range of the Bayraktar TB3 is approximately 150 kilometers, allowing it to cover a substantial area during missions. It can operate at altitudes of up to 24,000 feet, providing an extensive field of view and enhancing its surveillance prowess.
Armed with various munitions, including precision-guided missiles and laser-guided bombs, the TB3 can carry a payload of up to 150 kilograms, ensuring accurate and effective target engagement. This versatile armament makes it a platform suitable for both surveillance and combat operations.
The Bayraktar TB3 is powered by a four-cylinder gasoline engine, contributing to its maximum speed of around 130 kilometers per hour. The engine’s reliability and fuel efficiency enhance the TB3’s endurance and operational capabilities.
With a maximum takeoff weight of 650 kilograms, the TB3 is designed for easy transport and deployment, enabling rapid use in various operational environments. Its compact size also bolsters maneuverability and agility during flight.

In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Russia's Lancet-3 drones have emerged as a formidable threat, targeting and severely damaging Ukraine's Leopard 2 tanks. Recent social media videos have revealed the devastating impact of these advanced drones, raising concerns about the future of Ukraine's armored assets.
The Lancet-3 drones have been a game-changer in the war since February 2022, responsible for destroying almost half of NATO and US artillery systems. They have been primarily utilized in counter-battery warfare, taking down enemy artillery, radars, missile batteries, and even small naval vessels.
Now, videos have surfaced showing the Lancet-3 specifically targeting Ukraine's Leopard tanks, with their distinctive X-shaped wings clearly visible. The drones deliver precise strikes, often resulting in small explosions and fires that can escalate into larger explosions if the tank's ammunition is ignited.
Reports indicate that the Lancet-3 drones have dealt severe damage to the Leopard tanks, rendering some of them unfit for further combat. In one video, a Lancet drone is seen hitting a tank's barrel, raising the potential for an ammunition explosion.
Despite Ukraine's efforts, their counteroffensive has faced significant challenges, with Russia maintaining a cautious vigilance to counter any retaliation attempts. Ukraine's reliance on Leopard tanks and American Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles, along with Western aid for artillery, tanks, and air force, has highlighted their vulnerability to Russia's advanced weaponry.
One of the key factors behind the Lancet-3's success against the Leopard 2A6 tanks is its specialized high-explosive anti-tank warhead, designed to target and penetrate high-value military assets like tanks. Functioning similarly to anti-tank guided missiles, the Lancet-3 detonates just before impact, firing an armor-penetrating round. Its attack mode involves a high-explosive fragmentation or thermobaric warhead, which gains tremendous speed during its descent, hitting the Leopard 2A6 armor at an astonishing 300 km per hours.
Another critical aspect contributing to the Lancet-3's triumph over the German tanks is its advanced EO guidance system, providing superior targeting capabilities.
Russia's Concern Kalashnikov, overseers of the ZALA Aero Group and creators of the Lancet drones, have revolutionized warfare with the Lancet-3's innovative warhead. It marks a significant departure from its predecessors, including Iran's Shahed-136 drones, making it more suitable for engaging armored adversaries.
To make matters more challenging for Ukraine, Russia has reportedly tripled the production of Lancet kamikaze drones and is developing the upgraded model, Izdelie 53, which operates in coordinated swarms, identifying and attacking targets with stealth and precision.
The recent unveiling of these advanced drones on national television showcased their capabilities, including autonomous functions for mapping and target identification, but they operate based on mathematical algorithms, not artificial intelligence.
The Russian Lancet drone, also known as the ZALA Lancet, was initially designed for reconnaissance and surveillance missions. Equipped with a high-resolution camera and thermal imaging capabilities, the drone boasts a maximum flight time of 120 minutes and can reach an altitude of 5,000 meters, withstanding various weather conditions.
Given the Lancet-3's potent anti-tank capabilities, its successful deployment against Ukraine's Leopard tanks underscores the need for enhanced defense measures and reinforces the importance of international cooperation in addressing emerging threats in modern warfare.
