Winnipeg, September 19, 2014: Renowned human rights lawyer Dennis Edney spoke at a dinner held in Winnipeg to recognize his decade-long service on behalf of Omar Khadr. In 2002, Khadr, then 15 years old, was taken into custody in Afghanistan by United States forces, tortured, imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay and coerced into confessing to war crimes.
The dinner coincided with the opening of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg. While the CMHR celebrated, Omar Khadr remained locked in a federal prison with the Canadian Government doing its best to keep him there.
Canada's claim to support human rights, as epitomized by its construction of the CMHR, is contradicted by the reality of Canadian government complicity in the persecution of Khadr.
Edney is the recipient of the National Pro Bono Award (2008) and the Human Rights Medal (British Columbia, 2009). Proceeds of the dinner will be used to offset costs associated with Omar Khadr's legal defense.
Sponsors of the dinner included:
- Peace Alliance Winnipeg
- Lawyers Against the War
- Lawyers Rights Watch Canada
- Canadian Dimension Magazine
- Global College, University of Winnipeg
- United Jewish People's Order
- Project Peacemakers
- Conference of Manitoba & Northwestern Ontario - The United Church of Canada

WINNIPEG, July 11, 2018 - The Canadians Care Coalition in association with Amnesty International, Menno Simons Students Association and the Global College Students Association held a rally entitled "Rally for Refuge: Rescind the safe third country agreement."
The coalition demanded that the Canadian Government rescind the designation of ‘Safe Third Country’ that is applied to the United States because the US is demonstrably unsafe for refugees. (The Safe Third Country Agreement denies refugee claimants access to the Canadian refugee determination system if they have come from the United States to the Canadian border.)
