MHRA finally release UK Vaccine Reactions data - what does the report tell us?
The UK were the first to administer the Pfizer vaccine on 8th December 2020 and over 7,000,000 jabs have now been administered, yet it's taken until last Friday for the MHRA to release the first vaccine reactions report.
Many people hope that the vaccines are a safe and effective method to support return to 'normal' so timely publication of this data is in the public interest. Now the first report has finally been released, what does it tell us?
On the eve of the Coronavirus Act 2020’s likely renewal in Parliament, I meet neurologist Professor Karl Friston who argues that decisions around lifting lockdown restrictions should be data-led, not date-led.
Professor Friston is a member of Independent SAGE, the group of scientists providing the Government with independent advice including the recommendation that Covid-19 decision-making be decentralised and local authorities given greater control.
As part of Indie SAGE, he has special responsibility for modelling but is better known for his work as a globally-acclaimed theoretical neurologist responsible for inventing an international standard for analysing brain imaging data.
I’ll be asking him how his background in neurology has led him to his current role with Indie SAGE and exploring exactly which data he believes the Government should be using for its roadmap out of lockdown.

As we mark the one-year anniversary of the first lockdown and the renewal for another six months of the Coronavirus Act, we revisit the measures introduced in the past 12 months and ask what impact short-term ‘emergency’ restrictions are having long term on individual freedoms and constitutional democracy.
I’m joined by Dr David Thunder, researcher and lecturer in moral, political, and social philosophy at the University of Navarra’s Institute for Culture & Society. Among the specific issues he addresses in his work are integrity in public life and the preconditions for a free and flourishing social and political order.
We’ll touch on all of these as we consider the apparently long-term nature of short-term measures, whether a more decentralised political system could have had a favourable impact on the outcome of the pandemic, and what a vaccine passport could mean for social equality and human freedom.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock yesterday announced severe penalties for those not complying with the new border quarantine arrangements, including a 10 year prison term for lying about where you have travelled from. How much further can these draconian measures go before the public relent?

Dig a little and you’ll quickly find that the Covid-19 global response bears more than a few similarities to what happened after the World Health Organisation declared H1N1 swine flu a pandemic in June 2009.
The WHO’s definition of ‘pandemic’ had been changed just a month earlier — nobody had to die now as long as infections were widespread — and much of the wildly inaccurate modelling was provided by Professor Neil Ferguson and his Imperial College colleagues.
At the centre of the H1N1 storm was today’s guest, Dr Wolfgang Wodarg, a physician, pulmonary specialist, epidemiologist and former German MP. As then chair of the health committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, he forced a debate early in 2010 on Pharma’s influence on the global swine flu campaign and the attendant rush to develop vaccines.
One of those vaccines was GSK’s Pandemrix which caused the deaths of at least 1,300 children across Europe and left many thousands more with lifelong neurological injuries, including narcolepsy. It had not been tested on children.
Fast forward to spring 2020, and the world was plunged into lockdown — in significant measure on the back of Professor Ferguson’s modelling — and the race to find a vaccine for Covid-19 was quickly under way.
Join me at 5pm UK time when I’ll be exploring with Dr Wodarg the parallels between these two pandemics as well as the attempt he and former Pfizer vice-president Dr Mike Yeadon made in December 2020 to get the European Medicines Agency to halt all Covid-19 vaccine trials.

In 2016 the Government ran a simulation called Exercise Cygnus to evaluate how well the UK could handle a hypothetical respiratory pandemic. The results were so ‘terrifying’ that Whitehall attempted to not just bury the report’s findings but sue any newspaper that tried to run the story.
Exercise Cygnus participants included the then health secretary Jeremy Hunt and 950 other Government officials who were collectively tasked with managing the simulated pandemic and theoretically saving lives. Their decisions and overall strategy were however based on outdated and poorly-planned policies, which resulted in ventilators being switched off, hospital patients being moved into care homes, and bodies piling up for mass burial.
My guest today is Dr Lee Jones, a reader in International Politics at Queen Mary University in London and a member of the Health Advisory and Recovery Team (HART). He has openly criticised the Government for a Covid response that led to the UK having higher than average numbers of deaths despite the sixth toughest lockdown strategy in the world.
Dr Jones has written extensively on the management of transnational problems including pandemic disease in his book Governing Borderless Threats: Non-Traditional Security and the Politics of State Transformation. He asserts that the UK is a ‘failed regulatory state’, another reason the Government responded so badly to the Covid-19 challenge. He also believes that if the Government had addressed even a few of the failings raised in the Cygnus report, which was eventually published in 2020, things could have been very different.
Join me today at 8pm BST when we will be discussing what went wrong with the Government’s strategy, how it can be put right, and what must be done so that further lockdowns and deaths can be avoided.

After 15 months of lockdowns, social distancing, and relentless fear-mongering, many of us — particularly the young — are experiencing significantly more stress, anxiety and depression than ever before. With no end in sight and the goalposts shifting yet again, what strategies can we learn to help us cope with the chaos? How can we surf the unpredictability and maintain inner peace and outer success?
My guest today is an internationally acclaimed motivational speaker who has coached Olympic gold medallists and helped A list actors achieve their dreams. Jean-Pierre De Villiers is a performance coach, elite cyclist, former Thai boxer, triathlete, and author of several best-selling books on how to change your mindset and create a life that will take you to the next level.
Jean-Pierre grew up in South Africa where he suffered a difficult childhood, losing his father to suicide at age 13. Bullied at school, he found safety in sport and self-development, so much so that he 'became his first client'. He went on to become a successful international DJ but after the partying took its toll and depression hit hard, he once again looked to his passion and purpose of self-development and coaching.
Two decades on, and having worked with CEOs, celebrities and other motivational coaches like the legendary Tony Robbins, JP is in high demand. His hugely successful three-month coaching program — Ordinary to the Extraordinary — has helped people all over the world.
Join me today at 5pm BST to learn more about Jean-Pierre's story and discover his top strategies for protecting your energy, overcoming personal obstacles, and thriving during the pandemic."

The so-called ‘Indian’ SARS-CoV-2 variants are apparently on the rampage, threatening to bring to a grinding halt the Government’s plans to lift lockdown entirely next month.
It’s more transmissible, we’re told. But how much more transmissible? As of 8 May, the new variant accounted for just 8.8% of positive cases, leaving the remaining 89.6% to the other variants, including the Kent variety which was the last major Covid bogeyman.
And how much more deadly? The actual data seems altogether a little shaky on this, but never mind: SAGE modelling apparently suggests that daily hospitalisations could reach 10,000 if the variant is 50% more transmissible than the Kent version.
Meanwhile, the Army is on the streets of Bolton lending a helping hand with a mass-vaccination exercise, and a so-far unnamed minister has today blamed those who choose to exercise their right not to be vaccinated for the variant’s spread, calling them ‘idiots’.

The Implications of Mass Vaccination during a Pandemic with Geerten Vaanden Bossche
Geert Vanden Bossche is an independent virologist and vaccine expert who was formerly employed at GAVI (the vaccine alliance) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
He recently wrote an open letter appealing to the WHO (and all stakeholders involved) to immediately halt the mass vaccination campaign stating that there is compelling evidence indicating that the mass rollout will dramatically worsen the consequences of the pandemic.
In this LIVE interview we will discuss his open letter and explore the evidence.
