A PLUS-SIZED model 'looks like Kim Kardashian' - and she loves the attention she gets because of it. Sammy Kreiger, from Portland, Oregon is often told that she looks like Kim K. Sammy says her “tiny waist and big butt, is probably the number one comparison” that she gets. Making the most out of her likeness to Kim K, Sammy has started to recreate iconic Kim K photos and looks. On one occasion Sammy recreated a famous photo of Kim Kardashian where she is covered in glitter. There are people starving in the world and yet there are nations where food goes to waste on a daily basis. It is very sad that there are millions that go hungry despite the world food surplus.
How much food do you waste on a daily basis? Half of it? America spends $218 billion growing and processing food that is never eaten. Food production in the U.S. uses 10% of the total energy budget. It takes up 50% of all land and swallows up 80% of all the freshwater consumed.
Yet 40% of the American food supply goes uneaten which accounts for 1.3% of the GDP. Half of all fruits and vegetables grown are discarded and half of the fish caught are never eaten. Some of the food dies on the vine, or perishes during delivery. However, nearly half of all the wasted food is residential waste.
The most common foods tossed in household waste, coffee, bananas and chicken. By some estimates, American families spend $1,600 each year on uneaten food. American food waste is up 50% since the 1970s. Meaning there was a time when we wasted much less. However, things are turning around and solutions are being devised.
The U.S. government has a target of 50% reduction in food waste by 2030. Because there is no reason to go hungry when you have this much food.
America throws perfectly good, uneaten food in the trash and that is alarming. This is a billion-dollar nationwide problem because Americans waste an enormous amount of food. A major reason is that food is cheaper in the United States than nearly anywhere else in the world. But, how solve this issue?
Research suggests that when it comes to fruits and vegetables, much of what is considered edible never even makes it out of the fields simply because it doesn’t meet the cosmetic standards of retailers and consumers. No one wants the apple that has the bruise on it, right? That same attitude is prevalent in American homes, despite the fact that 1 in 6 people in America are not sure where their next meal is coming from. Will this problem be reduced with a change in the national mentality?
There are cultures all around the world that we are not familiar with. Unless you have gone out of your way to learn about these other cultures, you are probably completely oblivious to what goes on with other people. Most people probably are only familiar with their own cultures and maybe the cultures present around them. All around the world, people from different cultures are eating different things, dress and talk differently, and do different practices. Some might wear certain robes or dresses, or some may cut their hair in a certain way, or have interesting body piercings. What may seem unusual to others, is the norm for some group of people. They in fact, might think the way you act or do certain things is strange, when you consider it normal.
This video discusses 10 of the world’s most interesting cultural rituals. There will definitely be things in here that will shock you, but it is very interesting to see what is going on in other parts of the world!
Coming in at number 10 is something called El Colacho. This is an annual festival in which men dress as devils and jump over babies that are lying in the street! This festival is held in Castrillo de Murcia, Spain and dates back to the 1600s. It is meant to absolve the babies of sins; the babies were born in approximately the last 12 months since the last event.
The next ritual on the list is known as sky burial. This is practiced by Tibetan Buddhists who take their dead ones to the top of a mountain to be feasted on by vultures. They do this to honor nature with the passing of their people. Monks are very spiritual and because of that, a lifeless body is not that sacred since it is just an empty vessel. They give it back to the elements by placing the body on the mountain top. The dead corpse is either scavenged upon and goes back to the living things, or decompose naturally, and goes back to nature.
A very interesting ritual on this list is called Kanamara Matsuri. It is actually known as the “Penis Festival” and is basically what is sounds like. A festival of penis inspired things, parades, snacks, penis shaped things, etc. This would be unusual to see a phallic shaped float being paraded down the street! This event is meant to bring fertility and prosperity. It is also supposed to bring harmony to relationships, and this event is practiced in Kawasaki, Japan.
Another interesting ritual is Sokushinbutsu, which is the live mummification process done by monks. They have a very strict diet of only pine needles and seeds which keep them from decomposing since they keep them dehydrated. They get extremely skinny and boney, and they look like a living mummy. They must be extremely dedicated to practicing this!
There are more rituals in this video that you should check out. They are quite surprising and some are pretty shocking. It is interesting to learn about other cultures in the world and see the things they practice. This video does a great job showing you some interesting practices!
The lost world. Or not? Have you heard the stories of the mysterious Dodo bird, or the Moa - an ostrich-like bird that walked in New Zealand, or the gracious Irish Elk or the Tasmanian Tiger? If not, than you must have heard of tor the Woolly Mammoth? – A beautiful elephant-like creature with huge tusks and hair – the predecessor of the modern elephant.
All of these special animals walked the face of the Earth but today they are extinct. Some died form the changes of the Ice Age, others were hunted by humans for their meat and fur and driven to extinction.
DNA scientists have good news for us – at least the video says so - on the basis of the scraps of DNA discovered on the fossils of these animals, they could reproduce these wonderful species and bring them back to life. It must be an extremely hard work, if possible at all. Then it makes you wonder – our Earth is inhabited with beautiful species already on the verge on extinction.
So why not also put all our efforts to save the species that are already endangered? Remember the West African Black Rhino or the White Rhino? The first is deemed extinct last year and the latter is almost extinct, due to poaching and human greed. So, let’s move on people and save what we have left on this planet. Our beautiful animals won't be here for long!
At least three top Republicans plan to miss President Donald Trump's farewell ceremony.
House Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Rep. Kevin McCarthy will attend church with Joe Biden.
Vice President Mike Pence is unable to make it due to logistical issues, says Business Insider.
Many people see this as the final snub to Trump from his once-closest allies.
Others may also fail to attend but none so far have been confirmed outside of these three.
Joe Biden is set to take office tomorrow and become the 46th President of the United States.
Do you dream of living on Mars? Walking your Labradoodle on the green planet, fraternizing with your Martian neighbors, wearing those big glass helmets and floating in space.
We might have taken this from a page in a sci-fi novel, but the truth bis, people have been imagining about living on another planet for a very long time. Space expeditions are being sent all the time and scientists are looking for other planets like our Earth, that will help us sustain life and live it better. But before we take to the skies, maybe we should think of another surface on this planet that we could house on.
San Francisco's Seasteading Institute is looking to the world's oceans for both inspiration and solutions: could floating cities become areas of potentially self-governed technological and scientific exploration while also acting as a viable solution to the ever-growing problem of over-population?
As it floats now, the first step towards this concept will be a small one; a coastal community built in the waters of French Polynesia with 300 inhabitants, with a tentative move-in date of 2020.
The non-profit institute has spent almost a decade wishing that 1995 Kevin Costner movie had never been released, because it stand in their way of selling the idea of “special economic seazone”. If things go as planned, the Seasteading Institute is foreshadowing a future that will have thousands of these floating ocean communities and cities by 2050.
For all we know, it has already begun, albeit in the form of a liveable yachts” with luxury interiors and stilts that anchor and stabilize the homes during storms. Each floating house’s 4,350 square footage can be customized to its owner’s desires. They also are also pretty environmentally friendly, powered completely by solar panels on their roofs and equipped with systems that collect and purify rainwater.
