As you may know, the new Baofeng UV-5R radios are "locked" and cannot transmit on GMRS frequencies or FRS channels (which are the same as FRS). But many online experts and know-it-alls have been spreading a rumor that you can easily hack the new Baofeng UV-5R radios and make them transmit on FRS and GMRS frequencies through this "one simple trick" in the CHIRP software.

Mrs. NotARubicon decided she needed her own Jeep so we picked up a 2006 Rubicon LJ (does this mean we can't call her Mrs. NotARubicon anymore?) - The LJ only has 58k miles on it and although it has been well maintained by the previous owner, it is going to need some work - but it's in good enough shape that she took it out on some rocks today - This is only her 2nd or 3rd time ever driving a Jeep on rocks and the first time we've had the new "ISARubicon" in the dirt so she has a lot to learn but so far she's doing great and loves "The ISARubicon" ..

The Baofeng UV-5R is a ham radio and according to the FCC you are not permitted to use the UV-5R or any ham radio to talk on GMRS channels - but, why? In this video I explain the FCC rules about using a Baofeng on GMRS and what the FCC will do if you do use your Baofeng UV-5R on GMRS frequencies.
Disclosure & clarification: NO FCC rules or regulations were violated in making this video. I did NOT transmit on my UV-5R on GMRS or any other frequencies while recording this video. Sophisticated editing techniques and CGI were used to make it appear that I used a UV-5R to transmit on a GMRS channel, but rest assured, it was all make-believe.
