Soon after its development, the entry of the iconic AK-47 into the Soviet Military ensured the 7.62x39 would have a place for many years to come. The cartridge has been employed in militaries around the globe, and is used by many police officers and civilians. This cartridge is comparable to the .30-30 Winchester, having a similar bullet diameter and weight. However, this comparison is not entirely accurate, as the .30-30 is able to fire heavier bullets at higher velocities. Even so, the 7.62 x 39 remains an effective cartridge for taking medium game as far out as 200 yards. The effectiveness of this round increases by using widely available soft point and hollow point bullets. A major advantage of 7.62x39 ammunition is that it is available in nearly every corner of the globe. All major manufacturers of ammunition produce this cartridge, and it's easy to find as a military surplus item. Having been mass produced by the Soviets, the Eastern Bloc countries and even China, AK-47 rifles and SKS rifles have been employed in almost every part of the planet. This global availability has created massive demand for 7.62x39mm ammunition. 7.62x39 surplus ammo is especially popular, as they are comparatively inexpensive and are packaged in steel, airtight cases – which protect the ammo from moisture and greatly extend the storage life. When asked to name a firearm chambered for 7.62 x39 ammo, most shooters will respond by mentioning the AK-47 or SKS, but there are actually several other commercially available rifles in bolt action and single shot configurations. Firing military surplus ammunition from these civilian rifles will generally yield a better group than can be obtained from the military rifles. Ammunition manufacturers, however, know that this cartridge is also used in sporting applications, and they produce several options in their premium hunting lines. As we talk about the lead-up to the Spanish Civil War, the situation will begin very much unlike modern-day America, however, it will become more like the contemporary domestic situation as time goes on. The main difference, of course, is that Spain was a monarchy for almost all of its existence until 1931. A republic was briefly declared during the years 1873 and 1874, but it didn’t have much staying power and ultimately was not a transformative government in Spain. Following the First World War, the corrupt central government of Spain became increasingly unpopular and a military dictatorship, that of Miguel Primo de Rivera y Orbaneja, 2nd Marquess of Estella, 22nd Count of Sobremonte, arose. This fell in 1930, along with the abdication of the deeply unpopular King Alfonso XIII. This led to the creation of the Second Spanish Republic and a new constitution in 1931. It was a radically leftist constitution in a largely conservative and Catholic country. Women’s suffrage, civil marriage, compulsory universal education, the nationalization of Catholic Church properties, the prohibition of Catholic religious orders from teaching in schools (and the Jesuit order entirely), as well as a provision allowing for the nationalization of any property that was for the “public good” were all components of the new Spanish constitution. In many ways it resembled the constitution of Weimar Germany, in that it was an attempt by the left to radically remake a country through constitutional means. The first election saw leftist elements firmly in the saddle, but the second, in 1933, was a major victory for forces of the right. However, because the conservative party had won a plurality in the parliament, and not a majority, the left-wing president of Spain invited the centrist party to form a government. Meanwhile the socialist government alleged electoral fraud, which caused them to become further radicalized.
