Sunset Timelapse over Tom Thomson Lake (July 7, 2021)
I was camping at Algonquin last week. While I was at Tom Thomson Lake, I set up my camera for some timelapse photography. I missed the first (sub par) sunset of the trip due to a battery running out on me. The next night was bleak and grey. But I was determined to capture at least one decent Algonquin sunset timelapse on this trip. Fortunately, I was treated to this beautiful view on my last night of camping. I didn't have to extend the trip and miss work!
Captured on my Nikon Z6 with the 24-200mm /4-6.3 lens. Auto ISO and Program Automatic work together really well to allow for capturing the full range of exposures from the start of golden hour to astronomical dusk. You might notice the exposure length and ISO noise both increase as the video progresses. _________________________________________
I talk about a few of the pieces from my latest show.
My biggest problem is I overpaint, so I stop when I'm 90% done, take the painting out of my studio, put it up in my living space, and live with the piece for a while.
Eventually, it speaks to me and tells me what it needs.

Watch me burn an old painting in slow motion (and in super-speed)
This was an encaustic painting I had made during my time at OCAD. Before I begin work on a large painting, I used to make a lot of samplers and testers to try out a technique before committing to the big piece. This was especially important with encaustic, a paint medium I was just learning. If the sampler turned out, I held onto them....for reference, mostly.
No longer. I havent done encaustic in 15 years, so why am I holding on to these samples? Into the fire you go!
This is a mix of real time, 5X slow motion, and 4X sped up video of fire consuming a painting. These videos are intended to be watched casually in the background, like something from the "slow TV" movement.
Creatred with:
Nikon Z6

Want to hear my Justin Trudeau story?
During my camping trip to the Coulonge River, a pair of underwear fell out of my canoe. I picked em up and stuffed em back in the canoe, but each day, they would fall out again, so I'd pick them back up and shove them back in.
When I returned the Canoe to the rental place, the owner told us that my canoe only arrived an hour before I was set to pick it up, and that Justin Trudeau had been the previous user of that canoe!
That means that I've touched the current Prime Minister of Canada's underwear.
Feels kinda weird to think about...

My last art show focused on how our Utopian ideas tend to turn to trash when brought into reality.
I fit this idea into my established visual language by juxtaposing images of new condo developments and their CG rendered perfection with photographs of endless traffic, power lines, graffiti, vignetting, chromatic aberration, etc.
The ideas that will spark my next body of work revolve around the glut of information flying at us at all times, and how we don't have time to take it all in and think deeply about anything anymore, it's all superficial surface level reaction. People tend to find someone to act as an opinion leader - an author, academic, philosopher, reporter, activist, politician, or whatever whose opinions largely align with our own. And we put blinders on, we start to follow this person uncritically, attack any critics of our chosen one as haters and trolls, and we get this strong sense of tunnel vision from living inside our bubbles of influence for so long.

Well, I bought yet another cheap IR filter from a random company I've never heard of on AliExpress. This filter blocks visible light and allows infrared and ultraviolet to pass though. After shipping, I think it was about $40 CAD.
I screwed the filter to the end of my 14-30mm/4, stuck that on my full spectrum converted Nikon Z5, then went for a little walk through the park.
My Z5 wasn't able to make a custom white balance for this filter, I kept getting an error message. I found the preset I normally use for full spectrum shooting worked well in the evening with this filter, but looked too purple during the day. The preset for 720nm worked best for noon sunlight.
I haven't had any luck dialing white balance in though degrees kelvin, I always use the presets, using fresh concrete as a neutral point for the measurement. Most IR resources I've found suggest using grass to white balance your camera, but I've found concrete works better, especially with the 680nm filter.
The Infrared effect is stronger than my 680nm, but less strong than my 720nm, but with a vibrant blue/purple sky.
A section of this video has the saturation enhanced in post. This part of the video is marked. The rest of the footage is straight-out-of-camera, no colour grade, no curves, no WB tweaks. I use the 'flat' profile instead of 'standard'.
