I teach history, which is why I am extremely thankful. I always hear people complaining that the world is becoming a scarier place. Or I hear people long for the good old days. Well, I'm here to tell you that the good old days weren't actually as good as you remember them today. Here is more proof that human beings have never been off then they are right now.
The world is safer now than it ever has been before. Wars have been on the decline. The last decade has seen fewer war deaths than in any decade in the past 100 years, according to data from researchers at the Peace Research Institute Oslo.
It’s easier to connect with someone you share the same values with than ever before. Do you have internet friends? I’m talking about friends who you have never met in person, yet you feel closer to them than nearly all of your real life friends? I think a growing number of us do. It used to be, if you were a freak in a say small town in middle America, you would probably feel out of place and lonely because the freaks like you were few and far between.
But the moment you were able to connect to freaks around the world, suddenly you had a community of your own. In fact, you no longer felt like a freak. Every day, less of us feel like freaks when we connect with online communities.

Once upon a time, for thousands of years, the human beings on two continents, Europe and North America, just ignored each other. Then, in the late 980s, a group known as the Norsemen, more famously known as Vikings, left Iceland, heading west. Led by Erik the Red, who had been banished from Iceland for murder, they eventually came across the island of Greenland, and settled there. Later, Erik had a son named Leif Eriksson (get it, Erik SON), who grew up to head even further west, leading a ship to what is today known as Labrador, the Baffin Islands, and Newfoundland. Thus, Eriksson became the first known European to explore North America.
Almost 500 years later, Christopher Columbus became the next European to explore the Americas. In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Sorry about that. Anyway, after ten weeks at sea, Columbus reached what is now known as the Bahamas. He named the place they landed San Salvador. Thinking he had reached Asia, he kept going until he reached modern-day Cuba, which he assumed was China. When Columbus returned to Spain the next year, he had products with him totally unknown to Europe like coconuts, tobacco, and potatoes. He also had stories of darker-skinned native peoples he encountered whom he called “Indians” because he had thought he was sailing in the Indian Ocean. Columbus later made three more trips to America between 1494 and 1502, exploring modern day Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, and Trinidad. After all this, he still was convinced he was exploring Asia. Others weren’t so convinced.
Spain and Portugal sent many other ships to explore this “New World” in those early years, and on one of the ships sent by Portugal was a dude named Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian who was not convinced they were exploring Asia. After his trip viewing modern-day Brazil, he was sure this land was part of a new continent. Vespucci spread the word about the new continent, convincing people he was right and Columbus was wrong. In 1507, the German cartographer Martin Waldseemuller made a world map in which he named the new continent America after the Latin feminine version of Vespucci’s first name, which is Americus.

I’m Mr. Beat, the dude who has made a video about every presidential election in American history. One possibility that should terrify ALL AMERICANS is the possibility of the Electoral College being tied.
Yep. Since the total number of electoral votes is an even number (538), there is an ever so slight possibility that the two major party candidates both get 269 electoral votes.
So what happens if the Electoral College is tied? Do we just have a new election? Yes. Yes we do.
In the U.S. House of Representatives. All INCOMING representatives in the House vote to break the tie. HOWEVER, that’s all within their state. Each state only gets ONE VOTE.
So what about the Vice President?
Well the Senate gets to pick that. Each INCOMING senator gets a vote. The way Congress is set up right now, we’d likely have a President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Woahness.
But keep in mind that it could still be tied in both the House and Senate. If that happens I suggest we just make Charles Barkley president.

87 years before Christopher Columbus sailed for Spain to the “New World,” a Muslim dude from China set sail for a new world. Columbus had 3 ships. This dude had 317, and some of his ships were twice as big as Columbus’ ships. Columbus had a crew of 87. This dude had 30,000. Columbus traveled 4,000 miles (6400 km). This dude traveled 7,000 (11,000 km). And this dude didn’t steal resources from foreign lands or take over these foreign lands like Columbus did. Instead, he gave pretty gifts and brought folks home to introduce them to his family. His name was Zheng He, and here is the story of his voyages.
At the beginning of the 1400s, China was the top dog in the world. This was when it was known as the Great Ming Empire, named after the ruling Ming dynasty. The third emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Di aka the Yongle Emperor, wanted the world to know how strong China was. He had an aggressive foreign policy, leading military campaigns against the Mongolian tribes to the north and west. Di also brought back the traditional tribute system, which said countries on China’s borders all had to recognize China as their boss and basically kiss his feet. These countries would give gifts to China, and in return China offered its protection and access to goods.
Di sent his favorite generals to meet with the Manchurian people to the north, the Koreans and Japanese to the east, and Vietnamese to the south. To the southwest and west, however, he had a different idea in mind. He decided to send out a gigantic naval expedition, and he chose his buddy Zheng He to lead it. The 56th Presidential election in American history took place on November 4, 2008. This was the first election in which I voted in the primaries, and there were a lot of exciting candidates to vote for. But first, let’s see how George W. Bush’s second term went. Well, probably not that well. The Iraq War kept getting worse, and Bush became a scapegoat for the government’s poor response to helping victims affected by Hurricane Katrina. Not only that, but the economic was in shambles after the housing bubble burst in what later became known as The Great Recession.
In 2008, Bush’s approval rating had gotten as low as 25 percent. Therefore, many Republicans began to distance themselves from him. Was Dick Cheney going to run? Haha, that’s a good one, Mr. Beat. This election became the first time since the election of 1952 that a neither the current President or current Vice President ended up a candidate, and first time since the election of 1928 that neither even went for it. Then again, Bush couldn’t even if he wanted to due to the 22nd Amendment, but anyway...the Republican nomination was completely up for grabs.
I will mention a few. First of all, there was this guy…Ron Paul, a Congressman and doctor from Texas, stood out among the nominees because of his non-interventionist foreign policy and overall libertarian views. He had actually ran for President with the Libertarian Party back in 1988 but had lost badly. There was also Fred Thompson, an actor and former U.S. Senator from Tennessee, Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City. He was mayor, in fact, at the time of the 9/11 attacks, and like to bring that up. There was Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and, of course he’s a bass guitar player, too. There was Mitt Romney, the former governor of Utah and the son of George Romney, who was a presidential candidate himself back in 1968. And finally, there was John McCain, who was back for a second-go at it after not getting the nomination back in 2000.
