Making your own canvas panels is a great cost-saver when it comes to being a painter. This is how I make mine with my own homemade gesso primer.
Before the invention of oil painting on sailcloth canvas, artists during and before the Renaissance Period commonly painted on solid wooden panels.
These were carefully selected pieces of hardwood, and painstakingly sized with hide glues and primed with gypsum or lead-based primers, in preparation for egg tempera or oil painting.
Today, making your own canvas panels for oil painting (or acrylic) is so easy to do.

What's the Point of Art? Part 1 of my series 'A Painting is Not Just a Picture!'
What makes art good? Why is art so hard? And how long does a painting take? Should you study art?
In this video series , I explore why art is necessary and talk about what makes 'good' art, and how subjective that is. I also talk about the resurgence of representational art and 'Post-Contemporary' art. The travails of painting are mentioned - where art is damn hard work, but also an act of love, and of giving one's best. I hope this helps you with finding inspiration for your art.

Please check out: https://www.damianosborne.com/painting-the-skin-tone-painting-the-figure-part-3 for more detailed information about the oil painting process I used in this video, particularly scumbling and glazing in oil paint, and the pigments for painting the skin tone.
There's more in-depth info on my blog not included in this video.
Painting the skin tone in oils shows figure painting in the classical technique of the Venetian and Flemish Old Masters. In this video, I am painting the second layer, or the overpainting layer. I use mostly scumbling oil painting techniques for painting the flesh tones.
By painting in layers, the artist is able to achieve a more realistic painting. This traditional overpainting layer in oils can be slowly build up in many painting sessions to create beautiful skin tones.
It is also easier to control your values, contrast and colour temperatures with a more limited palette per painting session.

This is the final stage of an oil painting, and my classical figure painting in oils tutorial. Silas the cat co-hosts this episode. But he doesn't say much this time.
Here I do some final glazing and scumbling in oil paint, painting the flesh tones and glazing the shadows. I also add some final highlights.

If you want a lot more information on these Old Master painting techniques, go to https://www.damianosborne.com/painting-the-imprimatura
Technically, this painting stage should be called a brunaille, as I'm painting the underpainting in shades of brown. I've already toned my canvas (imprimatura usually) and then done a charcoal drawing ON TOP of that.
So if you want to know a lot more about old masters oil painting techniques, check out the link above.
Here is the second part of my figure painting titled 'Transformation', where I paint the imprimatura layer with burnt umber oil paint, a bit of linseed oil and gum turpentine medium, and a trusty hogshair filbert brush.
