Prime Time Special Edition 102: Liana Fuente, Arturo Fuente Cigars
For Prime Time Special Edition 102, we welcome Liana Fuente of Arturo Fuente Cigars as our special guest. Liana’s a fourth-generation Fuente, and we will talk about her experience working for one of the most iconic family-run businesses in the world.
In our second segment, we will begin Aging Experiment #4 with the Aladino Corojo Reserva Figurado!
Plus, we have a special Tabacalera USA giveaway, One Must Go, and our Great Things are Happening Segments.
From the 2021 PCA Trade Show, we talk to James Brown at Oveja Negra Brands
At the Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show, Oveja Negra Brands returned with the same booth as it had for the 2019 IPCPR Trade Show. This was especially pleasing because I loved how this booth highlighted the unique nature of each of the four brands – and still puts them under one umbrella. The world has changed quite a bit since 2019, but Oveja Negra Brands still keeps to its “less is more” small batch philosophy, and it paid off dividends. Between Cigar Coop and El Oso Fumar, Oveja Negra Brands has collected quite a number of awards. Meanwhile, there was no shortage of new things to look forward to in 2021.

Over the past two years, HVC Cigars made a couple of significant moves toward vertical integration. In June 2021, the company announced it would be handling its own distribution which includes warehousing and order fulfillment. Almost a year later in June 2022, the company announced it was opening its own factory – Fabrica de Tabacos HVC S.A. It has continued expanding production out of the factory since then. Earlier this year, there was an expansion to the HVC Selección No. 1 HVC Selección No. 1 Natural. At this year's Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show, an expansion was done to the HVC Hot Cake line in the form of a Connecticut Shade cigar known as the HVC Hot Cake Golden Line. The HVC Hot Cake Golden Line would be the first Connecticut Shade cigar by HVC. Both of these cigars would come out of the HVC factory.

Coming in at #19 is Rocky Patel Disciple Toro. Rocky Patel Premium Cigars has been on a roll in regard to its use of the Mexican San Andres wrapper. In 2021, we named the Rocky Patel Winter Collection as the Cigar Coop #1 Cigar of the Year which made use of that wrapper. Another high-profile release using that wrapper was the Rocky Patel Sixty. The Sixty made its debut at the 2021 PCA Trade Show; but at that trade show, there was a second Mexican San Andres release launched. That flew under the radar because of Sixty and that cigar is the Rocky Patel Disciple.
In addition to the Mexican San Andres wrapper, the Rocky Patel Disciple uses Nicaraguan tobaccos for the binder and filler. The Nicaraguan tobaccos are from Rocky Patel’s farms in Condega and Estelí. Production also comes from Rocky Patel’s TAVICUSA factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. The Toro size is a classic 6 x 52.
The Rocky Patel Disciple Toro is not a cigar that is going to overwhelm you with boldness. It started out mild to medium in strength and body before going to medium in the second half. That does not mean it's short on flavor. This cigar is going to deliver notes of cocoa, cedar, earth, fruit, and pepper - and they balance each other very nicely.
For Rocky Patel Premium Cigars, this marks the seventh year it has landed a cigar on the Cigar Coop Countdown, and its the third consecutive year it has landed on the Countdown (incidentally with one San Andres Mexican wrapper each of those three years). If you are keeping score at home, Nicaragua has now landed eight of the 12 cigars unveiled thus far on the 2022 Countdown.

Lampert Cigars was a first-time booth visit for the Cigar Coop Coalition team. However, the brand has been on the team's radar for some time. The brand is the namesake of Dr. Stefan Lampert, a lawyer out of Austria. He created a brand called My Cigar Lab which gave people the opportunity to create their very own handmade premium cigars as if in a laboratory. This became a springboard for Lampert to then start to share some of his favorite blends, and thus Lampert Cigars was born. Over the past few years, Lampert began working with many factories in different countries to make his cigars. This year, the focus was on a new San Andres blend for his core Lampert 1675 line and a PCA Exclusive offering.

Coming in at #16 is the E.P. Carrillo Pledge Prequel. The Pledge is the third installment of E.P. Carrillo's Family Series line. It's most famous because it was the second cigar on this line to capture Cigar Aficionado's #1 Cigar of the Year. The name Pledge is meant to be a homage to all cigar smokes. it was actually chosen from input from consumers who visited the E.P. Carrillo booth at Cigar Aficionado’s 2019 Big Smoke Las Vegas event.
The E.P. Carrillo Pledge is highlighted by a Connecticut Havana wrapper. Company founder Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Jr is known for working with Ecuadorian Sumatra and Connecticut Broadleaf, and in recent years we’ve seen him use this wrapper many times. It's been used on releases for Crowned Heads (Four Kicks Maduro, Mule Kick LE 2018 and on E.P. Carrillo’s Original Rebel Rebellious and TAA Exclusive 2018 cigars. As for the remainder of the blend, it features an Ecuadorian binder and all-Nicaraguan fillers. The Prequel is a classic 5 x 50 box-pressed Robusto. The cigar is produced at Perez-Carrillo's Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic.
Flavor-wise, the E.P. Carrillo Pledge Prequel delivers notes of coffee, licorice, black cherry, wood, and pepper. This is a cigar where the flavors are in the medium/medium to full range throughout the smoking experience. These flavors are countered by medium strength.
This is the eighth year since the Countdown was launched in 2010 that E.P. Carrillo has secured a spot on one. This cigar also gives the Dominican Republic its second cigar on the 2021 Countdown.
