This year Hacktoberfest has taken a turn for the worse. Starting on the first day of October, thousands of spam pull requests were opened with the sole intent of merging 5 pull requests to gain a free T-shirt. This left a huge burden on maintainers as well as other contributors. In this video I talk about the effect of this year's Hacktoberfest as well as how it can be fixed.
? Concepts Covered:
- What Hacktoberfest is
- The burden Hacktoberfest puts on maintainers
- Why spam pull requests effect more than just the maintainers
- How to improve Hacktoberfest

In this video you are going to build your very first game. We will be using JavaScript to build a simple text adventure game that can be expanded upon as far as your creativity can take it. Everything we cover in this video will be incredibly beginner friendly, so no matter your skill level you will be able to build this text adventure game. We will be using a finite state machine combined with dynamic character state in order to craft an infinitely expandable text adventure game.
If you create a text adventure using this tutorial tweet me @DevSimplified, so I can see your game!

It may seem counterintuitive to use unstyled components, especially after so much time has been spent developing libraries like Bootstrap, but unstyled components are one of my favorite things to happen to frontend development. The reason these libraries are so amazing is because they make it so easy to create custom styled components that look exactly like you want them to while also containing all the complex accessibility and functionality that is difficult to create on your own.

Impostor syndrome is one of the biggest problems in web development and programming as a whole. With the vast amount of technologies, languages, and frameworks to learn it can be incredibly overwhelming, which leads to a feeling of not being good enough. You feel like eventually everyone will see that you do not belong and you constantly struggle to overcome that feeling. Since there are some many things to learn in tech it is not possible to know them all and it is important to remember that. There will always be people more knowledgeable than you in certain subjects, but that doesn't make them smarter than you. You will almost certainly be more knowledgeable in your own subjects than they are, and because of that you should seek out these people you see as smart and learn from them as they learn from you.

This may sound crazy but I really don't use the else keyword in my programming anymore. When I do end up using else it usually leads to worse code than if I purposely avoided it. In this video I explain exactly why that is.

Animations in CSS are hard enough to implement in just two dimensions, but when you have to deal with three dimensions it gets much harder. In this video I will be attempting to create a full 3D flip countdown timer animation.
