Microphone? Check!
Interface? Check!
Cable? Check!
Now wait one second! You probably put thought into what microphone you're using and what interface it's going into but did you stop to consider the cable that carries the signal between the two?
Crystal clean spring water traveling from a clean barrel to a clean pitcher is only going to be clean if it travels thru a clean hose. That is true about water and it's true about sound.
In this video I demonstrate why it's so important that you use a balanced audio cable instead of an unbalanced cable. And if doing a long cable run, it's even more important! Join me and I explain the difference between a balanced and an unbalanced cable and then demonstrate why it's important!

Welcome to the twenty first episode of the Speed Bumps Podcast. I haven't discussed our first topic in a straight forward and searchable manner before. Boom poles can be wired in different ways and each of those configurations offer pros and cons so we're going to start off discussing those. For the second topic I'm going to cover why I would prefer to hire a sound person that knows about camera over a camera person that understands sound. Enjoy.
0:00 Intro
3:33 Pros and Cons of Different Boom Cable Configurations
13:19 Camera Op Doing Sound vs Sound Person Doing Camera
23:59 Outro

There are many reasons why you may want to add a low/high pass filter to your audio recording but you might not know why it's necessary. When recording sound, you don't need to record or include in your finished audio any sound except for the frequencies you wanted to record. This can help ensure your audio is as high a quality as possible. Everything from air conditioner noise to malfunctioning camera fans can affect your sound in an undesirable way which is why roll-off is such a good thing. In this video I'll explain high/low pass filters and why you would use them.

If you're unfamiliar with how to record clean dialogue in a room full of extras that are audibly mingling and making noise, this video is for you!
In a world where room tone is becoming less and less important to workflow, is walla still necessary? What is walla and how do you use it? Does it even matter how you record it? All of these questions and more will be answered in this video.

It's not enough to just point out the flaws of a $60 boom pole without demonstrating that there are better models out there. In this video I check out the LyxPro MPL-20 boom pole and compare it to K-Tek's Mighty Boom KP16CCR and the Ambient QS-5130.
Surprisingly the LynPro is better than expected. The knuckles and cable are total garbage but aside from that, the boom itself is relatively quiet once in position. It did bow quite a bit but that wasn't visible to the camera. It's also rather short at only 9 feet 3 inches long but that may be long enough for some people. Join me as we go thru this $60 and the 2 professional booms to see how they compare.

It may surprise you to hear but regardless of the the budget of the production you're working on, the expectations of your sound department is the exact same. Not the rates, politics, production values... just expectations. Lav mics have to be clean, the signal to noise ratio needs to be high, boom mics have to be close to the actor's heads and on mic... if they aren't, the audience would notice if it made it into the show. Post will correct that which is not good enough but does your production have enough money for post audio sweetening or dialogue replacement? Maybe, maybe not but regardless... there are expectations of you and if you fail to deliver them... Yikes!

In our second attempt to destroy the Electro-Voice 664, we expose the microphone to extremely high temperatures. What better way that to grill it? Will it survive? Well... We'll have to see.

When shooting in a controlled studio environment, you may be able to get away with not using a windscreen on your mic but anytime you go on location, you'll want to use one. There are many options to consider and not all the time in the world to test them for yourself so in this video, I'll do it for you.
A very special thank you to Trew Audio Atlanta for hosting us for this test and for providing so many top notch options to compare and test in this video. Thank you also to Hugo Kundert and Marcus Petruska for helping me conduct the testing.
