Hopes and fears around Britain entering the European common market in 1972 manifested in many ways – such as this opportunistic TV ad. Were such “British” institutions as Heinz Baked Beans on toast under threat? But before building walls around our national treasures we should perhaps bear in mind that the company flying the Union Jack to flog their canned goods is actually American.

Monitor | Kingsley Amis
The writer ponders the success of 'Lucky Jim' and his latest novels.
CHANNEL | BBC Television Service
FIRST BROADCAST | 02 February 1958
SYNOPSIS
Huw Wheldon introduces this report from writer and critic Simon Raven, who travels to Swansea to converse with Kingsley Amis at the university where he teaches. In this genial interview, Amis recalls his most famous character, Jim Dixon, the protagonist of 'Lucky Jim', and discusses his subsequent writing career, including the novel on which he is currently working (published as 'Take a Girl Like You').
DID YOU KNOW?
Amis met Philip Larkin in 1941, when they both went up to St John's College, Oxford, to read English. They quickly established a close friendship that lasted throughout their lives (in 1985, Amis gave the address at Larkin's funeral) and had a profound influence on their literary careers.

A short film which appears to show the interior and deck of the Titanic only minutes prior to its ill-fated voyage in April 1912. Included in the footage is Captain E.J. Smith apparently inspecting the ship just 10 minutes prior to departure, various deck promenades, and the actual leaving of the ship. However it is a sneaky bit of sleight of hand by the newsreel company, splicing together footage from other ships (mostly the Titanic’s ‘sister’ ship The Olympic). Notice the scratched out name plates on the frames which appear as floating white marks in the film.

"“Oh damn! Damn! Damn! Damnit, damnit, blast it!” he screams at Brian while sitting in a hole in the ground. Brian is, at this point, on the run from the hordes who believe he is the Messiah and urges the hermit to be quiet.
“Eighteen years of total silence and you! shh! me!"
The frustrated naked hermit quickly changes his tune, screaming “I’m alive! I’m alive,” before quickly realising that it probably wasn’t the best idea. The naked Hermit ends up being persecuted for saying he’s ‘not the messiah’ once again.
Naturally no list would be complete without an honourable mention for the film Life Of Brian, which, in its entirety deserves to be on this list.
There are simply too many brilliant moments in the British comedy film from 1979, which Jones oversaw as its director.
But for Terry’s highlight, it has got to be his starring role as The Naked Hermit.
