In this episode Shahriar reviews the ITECH T9121 Digital Power Meter. The IT9100 power meter series can provide up to 1000Vrms and 50Arms and measurement bandwidth of 100KHz. The instruments can measure voltage, current, power, frequency, harmonics and other parameters. The standard configuration includes USB, GPIB, RS232 and LAN communication interfaces and also interfaces for USB-based peripheral devices. The basic voltage and current accuracy is 0.1%.

In this episode Shahriar repairs an HP 87421 power supply in order to revive a HP 83017A 0.5-26.6GHz Microwave System Amplifier. The power supply has multiple bad capacitors which can be readily exchanged. An X-ray of a bad versus good capacitor is also shown. A custom cable must be made and the pinouts of each module should be revers engineered.
The amplifier successful powers on and various performance metrics are measured. S-parameters, noise figure, PSAT, OIP3 and detector are all measured and verified. The instrument used are the Keysight FieldFox, Junkosha RF cables, R&S NRP power sensor, R&S SMB RF Vector Generator and R&S ZNL20 real-time spectrum analyzer / network analyzer hybrid.

In this episode Shahriar examines a failed Agilent 1169A 12GHz Smart Active Probe. The probe does not get recognized by the oscilloscope and therefore cannot be calibrated. The instrument uses an I2C interface to the probe to download the probe's specifications and characteristics.
The probe teardown reveals a simple I2C EEPROM IC. After removing the IC it becomes clear that the chip is damaged and must be replaced. A duplicate probe is used to copy the EEPROM data onto a new IC which revives the probe. With the help of the community, the CRC checksum code is discovered and the probe is assigned a new serial number.

In this episode Shahriar retrofits a vintage HP 8445B Auto Preselector for testing and characterization of high-performance data converters and oscilloscopes. The Preselector is in essence an electronically tunable band-pass filter with exceptional tuning range and quality factor.
After examining the schematic and block diagram of the instrument the unit is equipped with additional potentiometer, low-band, high-band switch and a voltmeter LCD screen which displays the center frequency. The modifications are applied to the front panel as well as internal circuitry to enable manual control of the preselector without the need for any external devices.
The modified instrument is used to measure the harmonic improvement of a 20GHz synthesizer. Several oscilloscopes are then characterized using the new preselector to determine the absolute performance of their internal data converter.
