Ben interviews Freddie about the central thesis of his new book. He lays out how "elite capture" shifted focus toward issues such as affirmative action instead of far more impactful ones like the child tax credit. Ben also asks Freddie to defend his ideas against some common critiques of the "elite capture" framework.

Ben Burgis does a Give Them An Argument crossover episode with German podcast 99 Zu Eins (99 To One), and in this segment, he addresses Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) — her popularity, her role on the Left, two recent controversies (one real: her “present” vote on military funding for Israel, and one no-so-real: her “Tax the Rich” dress at the Met Gala). Ben’s take isn’t exactly complicated: AOC is one individual who is certainly flawed; she’s one lawmaker among many who will not always make the right political choices; fundamentally she is a tool of the people and we should hold her to certain standards.

Ben Burgis dares to have Rania Khalek, Daniel Bessner, and Katie Halper on his show all at once, for an explosively informed discussion of some deranged individuals that have managed to shape our domestic and foreign policy in recent years. They also discuss other crazy monstrous things like welfare reform, the storming of the Capitol, and U.S.-backed coups in other countries.

Ben Burgis is joined by “Jacobin” Senior Editor Shawn Gude (https://twitter.com/shawngude) (https://jacobinmag.com/2020/09/eugene-debs-democracy-antiwar-canton); professor, author, and historian-about-town Harvey Kaye (https://twitter.com/harveyjkaye); and professor, editor, and writer Daniel Bessner (https://twitter.com/dbessner).
The gang starts discussing social democracy, and all of a sudden, THE STAKES ARE RAISED. Harvey Kaye would like to correct Daniel Bessner just slightly about something we all take very seriously and think about every day, which is whether or not Eugene Debs “bows to German social democracy.” All hell breaks loose. People are saying things like, "Well sure, I have to defer to your expertise," and Ben is trying to make everyone sound right...it's CRAZY.
