Have you ever had a difficult space that was really small, underutilized, or just plain awkward that you didn’t know what to do with? In this video I’ll give you 5 tips to level up your interior design with custom joinery. 1. Design a considered response to the existing context When designing and making custom cabinetry and furniture you’re always responding to an existing space. Your insertion should aim to elevate the inhabitant’s experience in a practical, aesthetic, spiritual or even a thought provoking way. As designers we all know that daunting feeling of looking at a blank sheet of paper and getting ready to start designing. What do I draw? The good news is that no project is in a vacuum and there is always a context. So start with a site analysis: spend some quality time in the space and simply observe. Measuring up is important but there are many other aspects of the site that you could also learn from: shapes, sounds, movement of people, temperature, light qualities, air movement, neighbouring spaces and their functions in relations to your site, et cetera. Document your observations objectively like a scientist. I’ll go through some examples but I’m sure you can think of many more ways to analyse your site. Armed with the data from your site analysis findings, you’ll find that blank piece of paper less daunting and your findings become a “toolkit” like an artists’ paints and your design ideas tend to flow naturally. 2. Respect materials like we used to We live in a very wasteful society where we’ve become accustomed to getting things now and buying anything we want. The downside is that we’ve lost touch with our respect of materials - throwing away things that are no longer in fashion or an off-cut that is too short. We’ve become a society that wraps wood chips in thin white plastic films and makes furniture that lasts a year and sent to landfill when fashions change. Aim to make honest furniture made from real wood that stays with a family for generations. Educate your clients by practicing what you preach. If something is broken, repair it instead of throwing it away. 3. Embrace imperfection As a society we seem to always be seeking perfection Whilst this has been very important in our progress and we’ve come a long way, it’s also important to keep in mind that nothing is truly perfect and that beauty can be found in imperfection: The worn treads of a stone sill from decades of use, Plastic paint peeling off a historic building to reveal the history that lies beneath, The way batches of handmade pottery are all slightly different from one another. 4. Never stop learning With each project you should aim to include things that you already know (that’s why you’re a professional!), but also include a new idea that you’ve never tried before. New ideas are hard and will create more work for you but is a very rewarding process when you look back and see what you’ve achieved. 5. Document the journey and share your story with others Don’t let all that hard work go to waste. Previously I used to take photos of my finished projects and shared them on a website. I’ve recently found that videos are a much better way to communicate information to a wider audience. We all have stories to tell so grab your smartphone and start recording your process. What I’ve just outlined are the steps that I personally take for designing and making what I like to call “Furnitecture” : it is an architectural approach to furniture.
