BEWARE OF DEADLY DESIRES AT THE END OF DAYS--DON'T LONG FOR WHAT GOD IS PLANNING TO BURN
What is Materialism or Coveting in 21st Century Terms?
Do you remember the 10th of the Ten Commandments? Almost all of us at one time or another, have learned these words. Why not repeat the 10th commandment with me now:
Exodus 20:17 (NKJV) “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”
In 21st Century terms, God is saying to watch out for six dangerous desires that can ruin your life, destroy your eternal legacy, and pierce you through with many pains:
• “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house”.
Don’t long for all the bigger, better, more beautiful, spacious, comfortable houses you’ve seen and don’t have.
Don’t wish for it, or get a second job to earn more money for it, or spend all your time looking for it: because that is idolatry!
Be content with the house you have; and use all your extra time to serve Me, says the Lord, instead of longing for a bigger and better house.
• “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife”.
Men that means don’t long for all the externally looking prettier, skinnier, younger women you’ve noticed in life. Women that means don’t long for the stronger, handsomer, kinder, more caring, more athletic, and in shape men that you have noticed along the way.
Don’t wish you had one like the ones you see at work, or read about, and don’t wish you had one like you see on TV, in movies, or online.
Don’t wish she looked like a gymnast, or a cheerleader, or an actress/model; or he looked like an athlete, or a movie star or a model: because that is idolatry!
Be content with the husband or wife God has given you; and use your extra time to serve your wife or your husband, and children instead of longing for a better marriage partner.
• “You shall not covet your neighbor’s male servant, nor his female servant”.
Don’t long for a more comfortable life with less hard work, with fewer struggles and cares, and with more free time to do what you please, like all the rich and the famous you’ve watched, and heard about: because that is idolatry!
Be content with the place in life where God has put you; and use your extra time to live more of each day for His glory, and surrender for His will to be done in your life.
• “You shall not covet your neighbor’s ox” [his plow animal or job].
Don’t long for that dream job that everyone else has, with all the freedom, perks, security, and high pay like you’ve seen or heard about: because that is idolatry!
Be content with what God has placed into your hands to do for Him, trust Him to guide your path, use your extra time to stay tuned into His Word, and follow God’s leading, and you will have the very best job in life that is possible to have.
• “You shall not covet your neighbor’s donkey” [his transportation].
Saying no to Coveting Anything
We must not find our joy in things, our satisfaction in things, our hope in things.
Greed is an attitude that gets demonstrated in both an action: POSSESSIVENESS (selfishness with what we have); and an attitude: COVETOUSNESS (longing for what we don't have).
So 2 Peter 3:11 (NKJV) gives us the first lesson from Peter on How to live for things in life that won’t ever get burned up and be forever lost.
Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,

Today we are taking our class on our first field trip.
We held the class outside so that I could show them all the locations mentioned in Acts 17 Athens.
I hope to send an update each day of something that we learn or see.
This is the Life & Letters of Paul Course, taught to groups of students in ten cities via live classrooms and then recorded virtual re-broadcasts.
We are learning Paul's Epistles as they fit in the Book of Acts, showing the geographic, historic, and Biblical context for each of those 13 Epistles.
This clip is the 260-foot-long, second-floor view, from the Stoa of Attalos of the Ancient Agora, the heart of Athens for 1,200 years. This was the marketplace Paul walked each day in Acts 17:17--looking for Divine appointments to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
You can see from the Stoa: the Temple of Hephaistos, the Odeon, the Ancient Agora, and at the end looking up at Mars Hill. What an amazing stroll through Biblical History!

Ezra Invited God into Every Part of His Life
Thirty-three times with eleven phrases, Ezra cries to the Lord. The secret of his fruitful life was his choice to invite the Lord into every part of his life and invite Him into every part of his day.
1. Teach me: 12; 26; 33; 66;68;108;124;135.
2. Remove from me: 22.
3. Make me: 27; 35.
4. Give me: 34; 73; 125;144;169.
5. Revive me: 37; 40; 88; 107; 149; 154; 156; 159.
6. Help me: 86.
7. Save me: 94; 146.
8. Uphold me: 116; 117.
9. Redeem me: 134; 154.

Taking the cue from God’s Servant Ezra
So how do we adopt Ezra’s strategy? Here are so elements to practice getting alone with God.
1. Try to spend at least 12 minutes each day in reading God's Word and seeking to find one truth to hold on to all day long.
2. From that time alone with God, think through your entire day. Ask HIM what would be the best use of your life for this day.
3. Try to also get in the habit of a weekly time of evaluation. Just a half hour reflecting on where you are, and where you are headed in life and ministry.
4. Finally, try one time of strategic planning each month, to truly reflect on life for a couple of hours. Take a spiritual retreat. Sit with a pad of paper, your calendar, and an open Bible. List your priorities for the next month. Pray over them, change them, decide upon them and then do them!

Each of us was built to a perfect and intricate set of plans, engineered by God Himself. Within every cell of our body is a set of those Divine Fingerprints called our DNA. The Human Genome is a wonder of precise engineering that laid down everything about your physical body.
So each one of us was perfectly designed by God for His glory: who we are, where we were born, how we look, all of our imperfections and weaknesses, and countless other details are all part of God’s marvelous design.
Each of us is the handiwork of God, like spiritual snowflakes, no two are exactly alike.
Each of us is like rare and precious jewels, no one is worthless or unimportant in God’s plan.
This morning, every child in this place was specially designed by God for Divine Purposes. Your intellect, your giftedness, your abilities, and most of all who you are as a young man or a young woman is the strategic resources God has given you to serve and please Him.
Now comes the challenge. Parents, do you know what God wants from your sons as men and from your daughters as women? In some areas, the Lord wants similar characters for boys and girls, but in most areas, His plan for a young lady GREATLY DIFFERS from His plans for young men.

Satan is Dangerous
Look at what the New Testament has already warned us about Satan’s activities:
SATAN MULTIPLIES EVIL DOERS: Matthew 13:25, 38-39
SATAN STEALS THE WORD: Mark 4:15
SATAN RESISTS MINISTRY ADVANCES: Luke 10:17-18
Satan is actively seeking to disrupt, destroy, derail, deceive, and defile anything that God is doing.
SATAN INVADES HEARTS: Acts 5:3
Satan seems to have the power of mental suggestion, which in the individual becomes auto-suggestion, and which unless halted and hindered by the Word and Spirit of God will also in him be expressed by word and action.
SATAN AUTHORS SUFFERING: Acts 10:38
In the final analysis, Satan is the ultimate source of all suffering, because he is the ultimate source of all sin, its primal cause. He is also immediately responsible for many individual cases of sickness and disease; of which examples are furnished us in the New Testament.
SATAN BLINDS MINDS TO THE TRUTH: 2 Corinthians 4:4
Unbelief of the truth seems to be the same as a special invitation to Satan to bring in the darkness of error and falsehood. He blinds the minds of unbelieving men to prevent them from receiving the light of the gospel.
SATAN EMPOWERS WICKED MINISTERS: 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 For such [are] false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore [it is] no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works. (NKJV)
SATAN BUFFETS BELIEVERS: 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. 8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. 9 And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (NKJV).
Satan’s hindrance of Paul’s going to Thessalonica gave to the saints there and to the generations since this precious epistle (Rev. 2:10). Satan buffets, resists and hinders God’s servants in every possible way, but God’s grace is sufficient to give them the victory.
SATAN HINDERS GOD’S SERVANTS: 1 Thessalonians 2:18 Therefore we wanted to come to you -- even I, Paul, time and again -- but Satan hindered us. (NKJV);
SATAN IS THE TEMPTER: 1 Thessalonians 3:5 For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor might be in vain. (NKJV).
Satan incites men to sin. He so arranges times and controls events and circumstances as to make the greatest possible appeal to the sinful tendencies of man. He is the tempter. If you doubt his power to tempt you, just ask Moses about his explosive anger, David about his simmering lusts, and Peter about his overconfidence.
Satan is Already Defeated

Hope is our breath of life.
As humans, we can live about 40 days without food;
And about 4 days without water; and about 4 minutes without air.
But as humans, we struggle to go on even for a moment without hope.
That is why we so desperately need this Season of Hope,
Because God is the God of Hope.
Our goal these next few weeks is to learn what the Bible says about:
Unleashing the God of Hope into Daily Living
Only God can offer real, enduring, and unshakeable hope.
Open with me to Romans 15.
In this chapter, God offers a life overflowing with hope.
Please follow along as we read v. 4-6, 13-14, 33
Romans 15:4-6, 13-14, 33 (NKJV) For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
(Hope is dispensed by the Spirit of God through the Scriptures. Little Scriptures = Little Hope)
5 Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
(God-given, Spirit-powered, Scripture-fed Hope transforms all of our relationships)
13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
(God is characterized by hope. The Spirit overflows us with hope, joy, and peace. All we do is surrender, ask, and believe God can do what He promises).
14 Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another. 33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
(God’s offer is to overflow our lives, fill our hearts, and enable us to have His hope in our everyday lives.)

Jesus Gave A Simple Map: Jesus offers us a map of the future that is flawlessly accurate and a guide for us to understand history—past, present, and future.
When God Almighty who rules from Heaven over all the affairs of mankind, gave to Daniel a snapshot of all the ages left for mankind,
God says this is all there will be to the end.
JESUS SAYS—Jerusalem is God's Clock Counting Down the End of the World! The close of world history is tied to this little city, called Jerusalem.
All the world will focus on Jerusalem as the Wrath of God is poured out in the Tribulation. Fallen human history culminates with Jesus Christ's descent to the Mount of Olives, in Jerusalem—as Earth’s Creator returns to Jerusalem, to restore His fallen Paradise.

Jesus came into the world to seek and to save the lost; and that is what it says as we open to Luke 19:10. Jesus spent three-plus years talking to groups, and individuals, pointing them to salvation. Then He died for sinners, commending God’s love towards us, as Paul said. That is the heart of our Savior. That is the love of Christ. Jesus is still seeking and saving the lost, every day, all over the world; and He will keep doing that until the last moments of human life on Earth before the end.
IF YOU WANT TO BE NEAR JESUS: SHARE HIS GOSPEL.
Each time we share the Gospel, He’s always right there. When anyone gets saved, Christ is right next to them, as He saves them. Everything important for now and eternity is tied to the Gospel of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.
That’s why we are looking at Christ's handoff of the plan of salvation to His Apostles. They learned for 3-plus years, then, listened to one last briefing, and then launched out in the power of the Spirit.
The commission of Christ was to evangelize the lost and then train every convert in following Christ. That equals making and training followers, or disciples, of Christ.
Last week we began a survey of each of the “making disciples” passages in the Book of Acts.
MAKING DISCIPLES IS WHAT JESUS CHRIST CALLED LEADING PEOPLE TO SALVATION.
A person must be saved to follow Christ, and everyone who follows Christ is His disciple.
So the Book of Acts shows how the early church evangelized, or “made disciples” in the 1st Century. As we read each of these 22 accounts we must always remember that there were dozens, hundreds, and thousands who were saved in those early decades. But, these 22 accounts are what God uses to illustrate how He wants us to see it done.

wns-70-a-living-hope-in-a-dying-world
The closer we get to the end of days, the more we need the bright hope of the early church that radiated from the catacombs and arenas of persecution to radiate from our lives today.
As we open to Luke 21 we find Jesus explaining how to impact our lost world for Him on a daily basis. We can make a choice, that makes our life able to powerfully display Him to a watching world; and that choice is to live in hope. When we live in hope we redeem our time. Daily life when filled with hope makes every moment count for eternity.
Is hope alive in you? Does it guide your thoughts and decisions in life? Are you marked at work, school, among lost friends in sports and recreational times by your living hope they can observe each day? If not, today is a great time to start doing so. Living in hope can redeem the time, and invest it for eternity. Now, look at the context of v. 25.
JESUS WAS NOT OPTIMISTIC ABOUT EARTH’S FUTURE
When Jesus was asked at the end of His earthly ministry, "What will be the sign of Your coming, and what will the closing chapter of human life as we know it looks like at the end of days?"
Christ's answer starts with a rundown of the now-familiar list of earthquakes, famines, wars, and pestilences; all of which, He said, would come suddenly and unstoppably upon the Earth like "birth pangs" – increasing in frequency and intensity as the end of days grew near.
But after those words He also added one more characteristic of the end starting in v. 25:
“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” – Luke 21:25-26, NKJV
After that, Jesus said in v. 27: "Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory."
In the meantime, He told about those who would witness the ramp-up of all those signs of His return in v.28:
"Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”
Jesus said when things start looking bad when global patterns line up with end times scenarios, it is time for hope to shine. Those words are Christ's call for each of us to make those little choices today that lead to a pathway that declares we are:
Living Hopefully in A Despairing World
A life lived in hope has always been one of the distinguishing qualities of God’s servants. From the catacombs and martyrdom of the Roman Empire to the centuries of Christians persecuted to the death in all time since Christ's church has always been powerfully marked by hope.
As we open to I Peter 1 we can hear Peter’s voice echoing the words he heard Jesus say that as times get harder, let hope abound. Live in hope.
