Crossing the Danube - Anabasis of Alexander the Great, by Arrian - Book 1, Chapter 2 & 3
Alexander the Great has just secured the Macedonian throne and achieved his first victory in battle as king, against the Free Thracians in the mountains. Now he moved onto his main opponents in the region: the Triballians.
Their king and noncombatants retreated to the Island Peuce, while their main force rushed around Alexander, to prevent his retreat into the mountains. But Alexander learned of this. He turned around and caught his opponents by surprise while they were encamped by a forest in a gorge of the Lyginus.
Once the skirmishing ended and the full force of the Macedonian Army pressed forward, the Triballi lines broke and they were slaughtered in the pursuit. Alexander turned towards the Danube and the island Peuce, but couldn't conquer it. He instead felt a longing, a strong desire that would come back again and again on his travels. This time it was to cross the Danube. There another enemy awaited him: The Getae.
Danube in its lower course was a sight that most, if not all of the Macedonian force hadn’t seen before. To defeat his enemies, Alexander would have formulate a plan to cross it with his large army and limited ships, all while threatened by the warriors on the opposing side.
