LOS ANGELES, Pacoima --- On February 16, 2024, approximately at 7:50 a.m., officers from the Foothill Division responded to a report of a Restraining Order Violation at a residence in the 13200 block of Paxton Street. The caller, identified as the Person Reporting (PR), indicated that she had a restraining order against her husband, who was present at the location. Upon arrival, officers were directed by a witness to a rear house on the property, where they met with the PR who confirmed the presence of the suspect, later identified as 52-year-old Pete Garcia. Despite officers' requests, Garcia refused to exit the location. After verbal communication attempts failed, officers initiated entry. A physical struggle ensued as they attempted to detain Garcia. During the struggle, Garcia produced a pistol from his waistband and aimed it at the officers. In response, one of the officers deployed a Taser, prompting Garcia to discharge one round from his pistol at the officers, leading to an Officer-Involved Shooting. Fortunately, Garcia was not hit by gunfire and was successfully apprehended without further incident. Following the incident, Garcia was transported to a local hospital by Fire Department ambulance for treatment of unrelated medical issues. He was subsequently booked and charged with Attempted Murder on a Police Officer and is currently held on $2,080,000 bail. The firearm possessed by Garcia was identified as a Polymer pistol (Ghost Gun), which was recovered at the scene and submitted as evidence. One officer involved in the shooting sustained an injury to his left hand during the incident. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and later released. It was determined that the officer's injury was likely caused by a round fired by Garcia, which struck a metal bed frame and caused fragments to impale the officer's hand. Fortunately, no other members of the community were injured during the altercation. The caller had a valid restraining order against Garcia. He was subsequently arrested and booked for attempt murder on a peace officer. On February 21st, 2024, the Los Angeles county district attorney's office filed the following charges against Garcia. One count of attempt murder on a peace officer, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, one count of resisting an executive officer. One count of Felon with a firearm with an enhancement. And one count of possession of a firearm in violation of a restraining order. According to the Houston Police Department and Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, at approximately 8:09 p.m., on March 11, 2024, Houston police officers were assisting a multi-jurisdictional task force surveilling a black SUV. Officers observed the driver of that vehicle, Roosevelt Jamie Overton, Jr, commit an aggravated robbery at a liquor store at 26834 North Freeway. The investigation determined that Overton has been identified as a suspect in more than 20 robbery cases across Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery County. As Overton attempted to leave the scene in the black SUV, officers used their vehicles to block his, preventing him from driving away. Overton exited the SUV, and officers gave him commands to show his hands. Overton fled on foot with a gun in his hand. Officers pursued him, giving Overton commands to stop and drop his weapon. He did not comply. Overton ran into a bayou tributary, still refusing to drop his gun. Officers from multiple agencies discharged their duty weapons, striking Overton. Officers provided first aid, but Overton was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured. Domestic Violence Investigation Leads to Officer Involved Shooting and Hostage Situation, San Andreas, California --- The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office released body camera and air support camera footage, multiple 911 calls of an officer involved in a fatal shooting of a suspect, Mark Aitulagi Lavea, 47, of Modesto. On May 6, 2021, at about 10:39 PM the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Communication/Dispatch Center received a 911 call regarding a male and female in an argument at the Sierra Inn Motel, San Andreas California. The reporting party stated a male pointed a firearm at the female victim's head. Deputies were dispatched to investigate however, the suspect left before their arrival. Deputies initiated a domestic violence investigation and began searching the area for the suspect. A deputy was interviewing the victim in the 500 block of Lewis Ave., San Andreas near the Diamond Place Apartment Complex when the suspect ambushed the deputy and victim. During the ambush, the suspect shot the deputy in the upper body. The deputy was able to get the victim to safety. Additional deputies, California Highway Patrol Officers and the Angels Police Department responded to the scene and began searching the apartment complex for the suspect. While searching, the Mark Aitulagi Lavea emerged from an apartment holding, what appears at this point, to be an uninvolved elderly female hostage with a firearm. The deputies attempted de-escalation tactics and attempted talk the Mark Aitulagi Lavea into releasing the hostage. Unfortunately, Mark Aitulagi Lavea refused commands and posed an immediate threat to the victim. Shots were fired and Mark Aitulagi Lavea was struck. The hostage was also struck by gunfire. Deputies administered first aid to Mark Aitulagi Lavea and hostage until fire and emergency medical personnel arrived on scene. Mark Aitulagi Lavea was pronounced dead at the scene. The female hostage was transported by air ambulance to a regional trauma center for further treatment. The original deputy who was struck by gunfire was also transported by air to a regional trauma center for treatment. A multi-agency officer involved shooting protocol investigation is being conducted by the Calaveras County District Attorney’s Office, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, and Angels Camp Police Department. Both the deputy sheriff who was shot by Mark Aitulagi Lavea and the hostage are expected to survive. Both are currently hospitalized. Mark Aitulagi Lavea, 47, of Modesto, was identified as the hostage-taker and had a lengthy criminal history dating back to 1989, authorities said.
