Law and Lawlessness: Deuteronomy — Teaching a New Generation
The New Covenant writers quoted this book of the bible frequently and Jesus used the teachings from Deuteronomy to help his followers understand his mission and their responsibilities. So what can this book teach us today, about law and lawlessness, and God's expectations.
"See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” Deuteronomy 4
The apostle John, writing at the end of the first century AD, warned Christians of church leaders who were rejecting John’s authority and the traditional teachings of the apostles, and even expelling faithful brethren from their congregations. Jeff Patton looks into scripture and the history of the time to add important information about the major changes in doctrine and observance that took place in the gentile Christian church beginning at the time of John’s writings. This important information about church authority is for all Christians who are looking to understand and practice the “Christianity” of Christ and the apostles.

Two millennia ago, Jesus Christ had a message for the people of Judea that resonates in our world. He spoke of the tragedies of his time when the Galileans were murdered by Pilate and the Tower of Siloam fell and many were killed. He also reflected on the nature of Jerusalem and its people in his day and what the future had in store for the people of Israel in Judea.
When Christ instructed his disciples in his Sermon on the Mount he gave them a warning. This warning was a reiteration of a warning given by Moses and repeated by many of the apostles. What was the warning? Beware of False Prophets even ones who do miracles! Jeff Patton examines the scriptures to get a complete picture of the danger posed by these wolves who masquerade in sheep’s clothing. Can you spot one? Do you know what their defining characteristic is?

God hears the prayers of those who worship Him in truth. So do we know what true worship is? Let’s learn a lesson from the days of Unleavened Bread and the conquest of Jericho that shows us who God will hear and who God will not hear. The Spirit “Poured out”
God’s spirit of wisdom is personified in the Proverbs as a woman of dignity and honour. “Wisdom” is concerned about the health and happiness of her people. She raises her voice and implores her people to transform their lives by listening to God’s instructions. She envisions the future time when God’s Spirit will be poured out on the remnant of the people that would listen to God’s call to repentance and transformation. Are we hearing the Spirit of Wisdom and Truth and walking with the Spirit at our side?

When society is in turmoil over the question of 'justice,' does anyone care to consider the issue of social justice from God's perspective? The Psalmist, David, wrote eloquently of God's nature and his love of justice. As a responsible leader, God's throne, the symbol of his sovereign power was established on a foundation of justice and righteousness. God was, and is, invested in the rule of law, and its fair and equitable administration. He promises a future where the cause of the just and the oppressed will be upheld. While the wicked and lawless will be trapped by their own evil and destroyed. But is this the social justice that many are demonstrating about in our time?

The scriptures give physical instructions about the observance of the day of Atonement, and each of these rituals has great spiritual meaning for Christians — believers in Messiah. The Day of Atonement is rich in symbolism, that represents the covering of sin and the restoration of the relationship between humanity and God. Are we in a right standing with God, fulfilling our role in a productive relationship, so we can serve Him and bring others into a right relationship with God?

The apostle Paul wrote of the glory of the old covenant and the ministry of death and the greater glory of the new covenant. What did he mean? Jeff examines the scriptures to fully explain the “ministry of condemnation” that was a vital aspect of the national covenant, and the “ministry of reconciliation” that is possible through a New Covenant relationship with God the Father. Both covenants are indeed glorious covenants
The gospel message includes the important promise that the saints will inherit the Kingdom. But who are the saints, how did they become saints, and when do they inherit the Kingdom of God? The answers to these questions are clearly outlined in scripture. So, are you a saint?
