Why does a certain object cost a lot and another one costs less? Who decides the price of an object? In this video, I wanted to explain how prices work and how they are defined.
First of all, we need to understand what is the basic costs that define the overall cost of a common object, such as an iPhone for example. This is: the cost of production, every object has a certain cost of production due to its basic materials, but how do the prices of basic materials work? Who decides the prices for those basic materials?
In our economy the prices are given by the rarity and the demand for that product: when the rarity of a product is high, and also the demand (so the buyers) is high (for example for diamonds), the price is higher. On the other hand, when the rarity is low, and when the demand is low (such as for rocks), the prices are relatively low.
This works because when there are many buyers and fewer sellers (high demand and high rarity), the buyers will fight to get the object, and the sellers will have to wait for the one that offers the highest price when a buyer and a seller exchange the good, the price is defined.
On the other hand, when there are fewer buyers but many sellers (low demand and low rarity), the buyers just have to wait, and the sellers will fight to sell the product, and they will accept lower and lower prices; when a buyer and a seller agree on a certain price, the latter is defined.
