Lightweight Backpacking Tent - 'Wechsel Exogen 1' - First Pitch Overview At the moment I am trying to get my backpacking and wild camping kit down to a slightly lower weight level without breaking the bank balance. I am trying to keep a level of comfort with my kit so it is an enjoyable experience to be out rather than suffering, but still saving a few grams here and there. Many of my tents are great such as the Decathalon Quickhiker 2 and the Robens Starlight 2 are ideal for short overnight trips or just a few days out doing the West Highland Way. But at 2kg -2.5kg in weight they are a bit on the heavy side for long distance backpacking in Scotland I feel. For me I think a tent around or under 1.5kg is potentially the ideal weight for doing any long distance backpacking trips or summit camps during late spring to early Autumn in Scotland. This is the actually the second recent tent that I have tried as I look for a lighter but Scottish 3 season setup. My latest lightweight tent test that I bought and returned was actually the 'Robens Goldcrest 1' which I was not too impressed with so was quickly returned. The problem is that there are many tents out there from Hilleberg, MSR, Tarptent, ZPacks, Terra Nova, etc. But finding your ideal tent setup can be very difficult. All have their own set of issues and based on reviews online can be either too heavy, expensive, bad condensation, limited space, single skin, difficult to pitch or struggles in windy weather. Arghhh the list goes on. Everybody has their own comfort level and as I have never tried any of the shelters such as the Zpacks Duplex and it is a lot of money to import it to the UK and find out that it’s not the setup for me. To be honest the thought of a single skin system and mesh inner does put me off a bit, so must be getting soft in my old age. Lots of people recommend the Hilleberg Soulo, which for mountain camps is an amazing system but don’t relish the idea of hiking it across 250 mile of something like the Cape Wrath Trail. This tent looked a good setup based on its weight and ease of pitching. Has fairly large vents to aid in condensation prevention and as I discuss in the video I do like an inner first setup. I must be one of the few people this side of the world that does. My main concern is the lack of guy points and tents such as the MSR Access 1 does have more. However based on a few films online it can be terrible with condensation and this put me off buying one even though I had an MSR Access 2 that was great. The problem is that the MSR Access 2 price has gone up and its footprint size required to pitch is a slight concern when doing hikes such as the Cape Wrath Trail where flat spots to pitch may be at a premium.
