WOD: Penitence noun [Latin pain, punishment] Repentance; pain; regret for one's wrongdoing, sorrow or grief of heart for sins or offenses; contrition. Real penitence springs from a conviction of guilt and ingratitude to God, and is followed by amendment of life.
PEN'ANCE, noun
1. The suffering, labor or pain to which a person voluntarily subjects himself, or which is imposed on him by authority as a punishment for his faults, or as an expression of penitence; such as fasting, flagellation, wearing chains, etc. penance is one of the seven sacraments of the Romish church.
2. Repentance.
PENITEN'TIARY, noun One that prescribes the rules and measures of penance.
1. A penitent; one that does penance.
2. At the court of Rome, an office in which are examined and delivered out the secret bulls, graces or dispensations relating to cases of conscience, confession, etc.
3. An officer in some cathedrals, vested with power from the bishop to absolve in cases reserved to him. The pope has a grand penitentiary who is a cardinal and is chief of the other penitentiaries.
4. A house of correction in which offenders are confined for punishment and reformation, and compelled to labor; a workhouse. A state prison is a penitentiary
The point is correction and restitution -
Well if you do something stupid, hurtful or damaging …
1. Admit it. Claim 100% responsibility.
2. Make it right (restitution). If you borrow someone’s car and get into an accident, you bend over backwards to pay the deductible, get the car to the garage and make the process as easy for your friend as possible.
a. If you forget to tell someone that she has a deadline that now has her working on Saturday to meet it, guess where you need to be on Saturday? That is restitution — action that reveals an intention of doing what it takes to make things right.
3. Absolve it. If you’re the one who offended, you need to listen to the person you hurt, humbly learn from your error and then let the baggage go (forgive yourself).
a. If someone offends you but doesn’t want to acknowledge or clean up her mistake, it’s in your best interest to forgive her anyway. If she’s earnest in her apology — and has shown it in her efforts to make restitution — forgive, absolve her and …
4. Restore the person. Let the offended restore, and let the offender feel and accept restoration back into the community or relationship. No residue. Done. 100%. That is that.
