In this video i go over how i will often use burr comb for wax when preparing to nadir a warre bee hive in very early spring. I'm not ready to drag out a lot of equipment yet but i need to get this hive box on ASAP. Burr comb collected last year is perfect for this. i just heat it up in my house on low heat, prepare the warre hive top bars, then nadir the hive the next day ... easy peasy.
Nadiring a warre bee hive means placing an empty box at the bottom of the bee hive. Supering a bee hive is when you place an empty box on the top.
I then show some slow motion footage of the honey bees coming back from foraging loaded with pollen and they appear confused, like their entire home just changed and thats exactly what happened. They figure this out in a couple hours and put it behind them, they have too much work to do while the weather is nice.

The monthly homemade ice cream of the month for September is mint chocolate cookies-n-cream ice cream made in a kitchenaid ice cream attachment. Mint-chocolate is a good fit for pre-fall as the nights are generally starting to cool down but not as cool as fall nights so too early for things like pumpkin or peppermint. You can also make the base recipe for use in any ice cream maker and even the ninja creami ... with a few modifications to when you add the add-on cookies, and also whether you freeze the base entirely or just cool it down to churn. This is one of my favorite recipes and its pretty easy to make. Home-made ice cream tastes way better than store bought ice cream and I use it as a treat after a long day of working around the homestead. Home-made ice cream does not always cost cheaper to make it yourself, which is actually a lot of things on homesteads, but the quality is way better and the taste is amazing. Ice cream is so easy to make, I am honestly surprised more people don't do it.

A few years ago I build this pvc coldframe that fits on the tops of my raised garden beds that are 4x8 feet. I used 6 mil plastic that would always rot in a couple months of sunlight. I am upgrading the plastic to tuftex polycarb clear panels which will last for years. You can buy tuftex or similar clear panels from lowes or home depot. I ended up using 1x2's on the ends to form a frame to attach the end pieces to.

My proven review of rescue beetle traps used to protect vegetable or flower gardens, fruit orchards, and ornamental flowers in your yard. Japanese Beetles can destroy plants over-night and I have been fighting them for 5 years now every summer. The attractant lasts all year. Very happy with these and the links to them on amazon are below (this is not a paid endorsement or review of this product, I purchase all items in my videos out of my own pocket and if I like them I tell you about them and if I don't like them I tell you that too). If you have never heard of pawpaw fruit or you are interested in pawpaw, or you would like some pawpaw tips .... this video is for you. It was recorded at a great time to show you how to tell leaves from fruiting buds, what a pawpaw flower looks like, how to hand pollinate pawpaw or a tip on how you can attract pollinators to your pawpaws. I also discuss how long it takes to produce pawpaw. And i give you some insight into my channel, homesteading lifestyle for 7 years now, and why i won't be one of those channels spreading FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) for every major political and environmental event that happens.

Early in 2020 when stores were out of things like bread and yeast, i posted a video on how to make sourdough starter which has been a staple on my homestead for the previous 7 years. I make a weekly bread most weeks and one question i was asked was how long could you go without feeding sourdough starter? I really didn't know the answer because the longest mine ever went was maybe 3 months tops. So since i had this starter i made for the youtube video, i decided to do an experiment. I last fed this sourdough around Oct 20, 2020 and it sat in my refrigerator all that time in a mason jar. Yes, the flour separated from the liquid and it fermented into alcohol but in 2 feedings i baked with it. By the way, this unfed sourdough starter smelled heavenly. The 2 feedings i gave it over 24 hours was 2 tablespoons flour and 4 tablespoons water. 12 hours later i saw bubbles which looked very promising so i added 1/4 cup flour and 1/4 cup water and 12 hours later it was just as vigorous as the sourdough i bake with weekly. So from my experiment, we know you can go at least 1 year, 365 days of neglecting your sourdough and its still perfect.
