Spirit beings exist in all cultures throughout the world. Some are very specific and refined like the spirit beings listed in Christianity while other cultures have immense catalogs of monsters, ghosts, demons, and more. In this video we lay the groundwork for understanding Spirit Beings in Taiwanese Folk Religion and Spirit Beings in Christianity. Folk Religion may have tens of thousands of creatures and animals, often with the stories and origins lost to time. Over 4000 years ago the roots of what would be a rich heritage of spiritual stories and beliefs begins in ancient China. Today many different religious influences have brought modern ghost stories, aboriginal monsters, Daoism, and Buddhist beliefs all into the same sphere of influence creating a very loose and permeable belief system when it comes to spiritual beings. Christianity on the other hand has an extremely narrow focus with two main categories of spirit beings, angels and demons. The Bible does not go into great detail about these spiritual beings but does say it's absolutely important to realize how much they influence the world around us. While extra-biblical sources such as Medieval texts may add to spirit beings seen in pop culture Christianity, a true biblical account is fairly narrow and not very concerned with the details of angelic beings. As we dive deeper into Folk Religion and Christianity it's necessary to understand these beliefs as they heavily influence what each one believes about the daily spiritual interactions around us.
