Summer is in full swing and our Icelandic Sheep are now out on pasture and we are using rotational grazing to keep them happy. While this is extremely beneficial for the sheep and our pocket book there are still a lot of things to consider when rotationally grazing sheep. Stocking density and resources as well as time are all factors to consider as well as internal parasites and resting pastures. Grass fed livestock sounds like a great idea but getting the rotational pattern worked out year to year or week to week does take some effort and materials and this is all things to consider when raising any livestock on pasture.

Making fish food may not seem like the most logical homestead endeavor but if you are raising fish having the ability to make their food can really save you money and close the loop on your systems in a sustainable manner. Raising fish goes well with having a garden as many of the otherwise waste items from the garden can be made into a very nutritious food for your fish. For us choosing species which are more or less herbivorous is key as these fish will readily consume and thrive on the fish food we have been making. So if your looking to raise fish on your homestead or keep ornamental fish just for fun knowing how to make your own fish food can be an enjoyable, cost efficient and healthy option to keeping and growing fish!

Its July but winter is coming if you live in the northern hemisphere. And in a way this is a calm before the storm. And after a day of a heavy rainstorm is it is good time to contemplate the coming winter and other hardships that are coming soon. Anyways this is a rambling thought but hopfully its at least interesting in looking at live in areas with winter and the deeper calm before the storm in the coming impending doom.

The Manure Pile Black Gold
On another cold January day something is cooking behind the barn. Our manure pile. The microbial action going on in the pile generates heat and despite the bitter cold temperatures the pile keeps breaking down in preparation for a harvest of compost for our gardens.
We just wanted to share this as we use a variety of animal manure in this pile mostly from daily cleaning of our barn. The pile ends up as a mix of bedding (coarse hay, straw and wood shavings) and of course poop. Anyways hopefully you enjoy this short video on one thing we do to help build our soil on farm. Don't forget to like, comment and if this or other homesteading adventures interest you subscribe!
