Hey everyone! Doctor Ben, not a real doctor here! Today I'm going to cover how having tight hips can lead to lower back pain. The body is a pretty complicated thing and one lever not able to do it's job means all the other ones have to work a little harder.
I'm going to use walking as an example. If your hip isn't able to extend far enough behind you, then either your gait changes and your don't walk correctly. Or your spine flexes to make up for the lack of flexibility in your hips.
Over time this extra spine flexing will lead to overused lower back muscles and extra wear and tear on your spine joints. You need to restore mobility and strength to your hips and retrain your body to do the movement, in this case walking, correctly.

Why Do I Hate Working Out? If people liked to workout there wouldn't be so much information on how to motivate yourself to do it! In your quest for health and fitness overcoming the desire to skip the workout is huge! But there's a good reason for it.
If we're brutally honest, working out is unnatural. For the vast majority of human history, the concept of working out was not only pointless but a bad idea. The reason you can't motivate yourself to get into shape is because historically it wasn't a problem.
But don't worry! I'm going to offer tips to get more movement without going to the gym or setting aside workout time!

I hate push ups because the military ruined me on them forever! I avoid 'em like the plague. But I see so many bad push-ups I thought a little instruction could help.
This is going to be a "how to do push ups correctly for beginners" kinda video, but even if you still have some experience you may pick something up!
There are a few things you need to remember with push ups.
1. A solid plank position - if you can't hold it for 60 seconds you're not ready for a push up
2. Start simple - start with an easier version of the push up until you build some strength, then scale up as you get stronger.
3. Protect your shoulders - make sure your elbows aren't flared out or you'll put unneeded stress on your shoulders.
4. Don't force reps - Stop the push up workout when your form starts to breakdown

All too often changing old habits and starting a new healthy lifestyle is complicated. Not to fear! Today I'm offering 2 simple tips to improve your health. In fact, these 2 tips are so simple you can start now!
Simple tip number 1 is just to move more. The average American spends 6-8 hours a day sitting! This has some pretty major long-term health implications. So, if you want to improve your health, you're going to have to move more. No need to get fancy. Start by going for a walk every day. If you can get out into nature while you do it, all the better.
Simple tip number 2 is to cut back the sugar. Sugar is in everything and if you're spending tons of time sitting, you don't need it. Start with a food log for a week so you can get an idea of how much sugar you're eating. Next, try to cut that amount by half. This can actually have a dramatic effect on your nutrition!

Alright! Benjamyn Smith, AKA Doctor Ben, here and today I'm covering 6 exercises to help you get your first pull up. These exercises aren't fancy and the only equipment you need is some kind of bar.
I cover these exercises in a progression series. Each one builds up the exercise that came before it. Work on them in order to make sure you have the foundation to do the next exercise.
Also, don't do an exercise too intensely. You want to be able to work toward your pull up goal daily. Doing a little bit every day is more effective than just killing yourself a couple times a week.
Start with just hanging to build up shoulder strength, then move up to swinging. Once you're comfortable there move onto hanging knee raises. This will condition your core while also stimulating you back and shoulder muscles.
Then we're going to keep scaling up the hanging knee raises until you're doing a modified pull up. Keep working the modified pull up until you're strong enough to do a pull up!

I've been cooking up a theory about the mechanism behind setting intentions, and how setting intentions helps bring about your goals. This one goes way out into left field, but I think it's an interesting thought experiment based in quantum physics. Sometimes thinking outside the box is good! Today I'm sharing my new favorite massage tool. I wanted to find an option for calf and forearm self massage that was close to a Graston tool but without the price tag.
When I started digging through my tools figuring I had something close I found that my wrenches had a bevel that I though would do the job fairly well. An ordinary wrench has become one of my favorite massage tools!

This week I'm kicking off Movement Monday! Every Monday I will be sharing a movement combo you can use to improve your movement capabilities. This week is a simple combo.
This combo is simple to implement and very easy to up scale as needed. You also don't need any special equipment. The combo is 5 hip hinges, lap the weight to a chest carry, and then chest carry the weight 25 yards.
After the carry, put the weight down far as much rest as needed and repeat. Keep performing the combo for 5-15 minutes depending on your fitness level. Pick an appropriate amount of weight to use.
