Zed is a recently open sourced, ultra high performance code editor written in Rust. It is created by the people behind the Atom editor and the Electron Javascript interface, which is ultimately what Visual Studio Code is built upon. Zed takes a different approach, forgoing Electron usage and instead focusing on speed and it shows. Unfortunately Zed is Mac only for now, but Linux is underway and Windows development is planned.
Bevy, the open source data driven, relatively simple to use Rust powered game engine just released version 0.8. A new material system, redesigned and more capable camera system and more are added.

Well... many of us have a few weeks now to sit at home... if you were looking for something to do, Humble might have just the thing. The Coding Starter Kit Bundle is a collection of books aimed at teaching programming, often with a game development focus, mostly aimed at children. There is almost nothing here for experienced game developers, but if you are just starting out or looking to teach someone programming via game development, this could be a great deal.

Adobe just acquired Brio XR, a 3D AR/XR/VR company founded by former Alias and Mudbox developers, in a move to strengthen their 3D experiences team. It appears the product will be killed off, with the technology and staff joining Adobe.

Today we are checking out one of the most popular plugins in the ongoing Unity Fantasy Games & Game Dev Assets bundle running on Unity, ODIN.
ODIN is all about making data easier to access in the inspector (or custom tool windows) and making that data easier to save/load/debug. Need to create an NPC creation tool, Odin makes that trivial. Want to expose data to the Inspector as a complex table? You can do so with just a few simple attributes.

The Bevy rust game engine just formed a foundation, the aptly named Bevy Foundation. This makes Bevy a charitable project, makes it easier for them to accept (and solicit) donations as well as moves the control from the hands of a single individual. All told it should be a net positive for the Bevy project going forward.

For those of you waiting for Godot... the wait just got one step shorter, the first Release Candidate or RC build is now available. Alpha and Beta are behind us, and full release is the next step.
Release candidates are feature complete and are focused on cracking down on bugs, performance issues and usability functionality, no new features are added. When the release candidates are done, Godot 4 will be shipped.
