FAQ-69: Mutah marriages still exist. Why? It's in the Qur'an!
BBC ran a documentary about Mutah marriages in the cities of Baghdad and Karbala on October 3rd, where they found that 8 out of 10 Muslim clerics they talked to gave certificates to Mutah marriages, proving that the practice was not eradicated during the time of Muhammad, but still continues even today.
A little over a week later Muslims in the UK were so incensed by the documentary that they put a petition together to get the documentary banned, believing it belittled their religion and was a mockery. The Daily Mail claims that over 20,000 Muslims have now signed that petition, but the BBC still has not censured it...fortunately. You can see the documentary, following the links below:
What is surprising is that neither the documentary, nor the Daily Mail article asked why this practice is so popular in the Muslim world, nor why clerics were at the forefront of not only promoting it, but carrying out the 'temporary marriages'.
The answer should be obvious! It is a practice not only sanctioned by the Qur'an in Surah 4:24, but supported by numerous Islamic Tradition accounts, pointing to the fact that not only Muhammad, but Abu Bakr, Umar and Ibn Abbas after him supported Mutah marriages. They are the models for Islam, so why is everyone so surprised it is still being practiced and promoted by the very clerics who are responsible for carrying out the edicts of both the Qur'an and the Islamic Traditions?
