Flux in City
Concept of this project
This art practice- the flux in cities is an ongoing project of interactive video installation. The fluid and fleeting landscapes (cityscape) showing in the video projection will be changed in their speed and directions for the reflections of the audiences' positions and movements within the installation consisting of matrix of four large-scale screens.
The work employs the moving images of various speed, scenes, and light to evoke the experiences and notions of traveling in different vehicles across cities (metropolis). Further more, the transient changing urban landscapes through rectangular windows of vehicles will be experienced as dynamic phenomena in this work.
On average, city drawlers spend 2~4 hours everyday on commutation and transport in contemporary metropolis. In those daily journeys, it's not a major attraction for citizens to take notice of fleeting changing scenes and urban shuttle experiences; nor like Baudelaire's "The Flâneur" who strolls in cities and appreciates the experiences of the constantly changing urban spectacle. However, the perceptions of streets, pedestrians, traffic lights, vehicles, scents and temperatures in cities become the transient imagery flow between departures and destinations. Therefore, when we try to recall the outlines of the metropolis where we have been, the conceptions of those dynamic urban images are not only fragments of the individuals' experiences, but also the practical (realistic) sensations.
On the other hand, contrasting with the urban spectacles from the narrative of the literature, photography, film and the other media, the fluid and changing urban scenes of citizens' impressions represent private histories and urban experiences more than the numerous "simulations". Far from interesting, the conceptions of various objects, facilities and spaces in cities have been de-materialized and restructured non-linearly as personal cityscapes in minds when city drawlers shuttle within metropolis.
This art practice - flux in cities looks at the changing imaginary flow a reflective theme in interactive installation art, not from the point of technology, but seek to examine and recontextualize the perception of transient urban images in daily life.
Feasibility
1.This work employs the web-cams as input in MAX/MSP to receive the movements of audiences, and than responses the values of various speed of videos.
2. Now the work is ongoing and continues to fine-tune the adjustment of the four screens installations.
3.The further step of developments in this work is the adjustment of software and hardware for accommodation of more capacities of audiences within the four screens.
