What If...? – Netflix / Scott Free (Andrew Dominik's War Party)
In the spring of 2017, it was announced that acclaimed filmmaker Andrew Dominik would be directing a Navy SEAL-based adventure action drama entitled War Party for the streaming service Netflix. Nothing about what the plot of the film would concern has ever been revealed aside from the fact that it would be inspired by true events. Dominik would helm from a screenplay that he co-wrote with Harrison Query, while visionary director Ridley Scott and his production partners Jules Daly and Kevin J. Walsh would produce through Scott Free Productions. This would mark Scott and Daly's second collaboration with Dominik following The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Also reteaming with Scott would be Tom Hardy, who was attached to star in the film. No doubt the project would've also seen Nick Cave and Warren Ellis composing the original musical score, as they had for Dominik's prior two films. Alas, no further news ever came of the project, with Dominik instead moving on to get his long-gestating passion project Blonde off the ground for the streamer. In the fall of 2009, it was announced that NBA legend LeBron James would be playing himself in a sports comedy for Universal Pictures entitled Fantasy Basketball Camp, to be scripted by Lowell Ganz & Babaloo Mandel and produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment. The story concerns five men from different backgrounds who come to Las Vegas to live out their fantasy by attending James' Adult Basketball Camp. While it should be enough that these dreamers get to breathe the same oxygen as their hero, the campers end up dragging James into their various life issues, ranging from the serious to the completely idiotic. The following year, Undercover Brother helmer Malcolm D. Lee came onboard to direct, with Peter Steinfeld being tapped to provide a script rewrite. No doubt many of Lee's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer David Newman, film editor Paul Millspaugh, production designer Keith Brian Burns, and cinematographer Greg Gardiner. In 2013, it was reported that Kevin Hart would play James' fictional younger brother — who wants a chance to prove himself — in the film, also serving as a producer through his newly formed production company Hartbeat Productions and revising the script alongside Harry Ratchford, Joey Wells and Chris Spencer. In 2016, Mark Wahlberg was set to star in the film alongside Hart and James, also joining as a producer alongside Stephen Levinson through their respective Closest to the Hole Productions and Leverage Entertainment banners, and Entourage creator Doug Ellin was hired for yet another rewrite of the script. No further news came of the project since then. Follow me and ponder the question, "What if...?"

In 2009, it was announced that Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum's Spyglass Entertainment had acquired the rights to develop a remake of visionary director David Cronenberg's acclaimed 1979 body horror film The Brood, about a man and his mentally ill ex-wife, who has been sequestered by a psychiatrist known for his controversial therapy techniques. Telepathically, she communicates with her group of mutant children, instructing them to act out violently. The screenplay was penned by Cory Goodman, whose take on the property aimed to stay true to the original film while still making changes that would enhance the story and update it for a newer generation of moviegoers. Martyrs helmer Pascal Laugier was initially attached to direct, but in December of that year, it was reported that Breck Eisner would be directing instead, fresh off of the remake of George A. Romero's The Crazies. However, the following year, Eisner passed on the project, stating that he loved the original too much to ever attempt to remake it. In a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting, Goodman stated that executives at Spyglass were uncomfortable with the material and didn't quite understand it, having found it "too weird." The screenplay that initially got the attention of Hollywood concerning visionary filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan is a grounded, heartfelt emotional drama entitled Labor of Love, which tells the tale of a Philadelphia book store owner named Maurice Parker, who loses his beloved wife Ellen in a tragic car accident caused by a drunk driver. Never big on words, he becomes haunted by the notion that he never properly told his wife just how much he truly loved her. Since she once asked if he would walk across the country for her, he decides to show her posthumously how much he did love her by doing just that, venturing forth on a trek from Philadelphia to Pacifica, California, which was her favorite place in the world. The script was acquired by 20th Century Fox, where it was in varying stages of development since 1993, with stars such as Dustin Hoffman and Denzel Washington and directors such as Sydney Pollack and Wolfgang Petersen coming and going, along with studio-commissioned rewrites by several in-demand scribes including Allison Burnett, Mary Agnes Donohue, and Ron Koslow. Shyamalan fought repeatedly to direct it himself, but the studio wasn't biting. After the commercial disappointments of The Last Airbender and After Earth, Shyamalan returned to the project in early 2014, intending to direct with Bruce Willis starring in the lead role, reteaming with the filmmaker following their collaborations on The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. Joining as producers on the film would be Randall Emmett and George Furla of Emmett/Furla Films, alongside Shyamalan and his Blinding Edge Pictures partner Ashwin Rajan, while Stuart Ford would serve as an executive producer via IM Global. Alas, no further news ever came of the project, as Shyamalan would instead move on to direct the found-footage horror comedy The Visit. Follow me and ponder the question, "What if...?"

A live-action feature film adaptation of Electronic Arts' popular survival horror/sci-fi video game Dead Space has been in varying stages of development for nearly fifteen years. Set on a mining spaceship overrun by deadly monsters called Necromorphs following the discovery of an artifact called the Marker, the game's story follows an engineer named Isaac Clarke as he navigates the ship and fights the creatures while struggling with growing psychosis. In the summer of 2009, journeyman D.J. Caruso was hired to direct, fresh off of the back-to-back successes of Disturbia and Eagle Eye. Neal H. Moritz and Ori Marmur were to produce through their Original Film shingle, along with Temple Hill Entertainment's Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey and EA's Patrick O'Brien and Steve Papoutsis. The Europa Report scribe Philip Gelatt wrote an initial draft of the film's screenplay, with a later draft being penned by Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Justin Marks. No doubt many of Caruso's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Brian Tyler, costume designer Marie-Sylvie Deveau, film editors Vince Filippone and Jim Page, production designer Tom Southwell, and cinematographer Rogier Stoffers. Presumably, Sony's Columbia Pictures would distribute the film given that Original Film had a long-time partnership deal with the studio that lasted until 2019. However, in the ten years since there was an update on the status of the project, no further news ever came of it. Follow me and ponder the question, "What if...?"

In the early-to-mid-2000's, it was announced that Warner Bros. Pictures had acquired the rights from Universal Pictures and the estate of author Ernest Hemingway to develop a new feature film adaptation of Hemingway's acclaimed novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, which is set during the Spanish Civil War and tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American man in the International Brigades who is attached to an anti-fascist guerilla unit in the mountains. There, he finds a reason to live when he falls in love with a beautiful refugee named Maria, and that life-changing event comes just as he's tapped for a potential suicide mission. David Benioff was hired to write the screenplay, having impressed Warner Bros. with his work on the Illiad adaptation Troy as well as his passion for the source material. Benioff would also serve as an executive producer on the project, to be produced by Nick Wechsler of Industry Entertainment. In the spring of 2005, it was reported that Leonardo DiCaprio was keenly interested in playing the role of Jordan but won't commit to the film without a director. Warner Bros. was in talks with visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan to take on helming duties, having previously offered him the opportunity to direct Benioff's script for Troy, which he turned down. Had Nolan came aboard, no doubt he and Emma Thomas would also serve as producers through their Syncopy banner, and that many of his frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Hans Zimmer, costume designer Jeffrey Kurland, film editor Lee Smith, production designer Nathan Crowley, and cinematographer Wally Pfister. Alas, this adaptation of Hemingway's book would ultimately never come to be. Follow me and ponder the question, "What if...?"

For purely experimental purposes, I took the trailer for Chris McKay's upcoming Renfield and converted it to black and white to see how it would look given that it's a new take on the classic Universal Monsters, and the classic Universal Monsters films were photographed in black and white.

A live-action feature film adaptation of the popular survival horror video game series Five Nights at Freddy's had been in varying stages of development since the spring of 2015. After an initial attempt to have been directed by Gil Kenan from a screenplay co-written with Tyler Burton Smith for Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema didn't pan out, Home Alone helmer and Harry Potter veteran Chris Columbus was hired to direct in early 2018, as well as co-write the script alongside series creator Scott Cawthon. Columbus would also produce through his 1492 Pictures shingle, along with Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, and David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith of KatzSmith Productions. The film — whose story concerns nighttime employees who must utilize tools such as security cameras, lights, doors, and vents to defend themselves against hostile animatronic characters that inhabit the locations connected to a family pizza restaurant franchise named Freddy Fazbear's Pizza — was to represent a return to the horror genre for Columbus, as he previously penned the beloved horror comedy Gremlins. However, due to several release delays as well as numerous script issues that led to rewrites and scrapped drafts, Columbus' take on the property would remain forever unproduced. In the spring of 2018, it was announced that blockbuster action director Michael Bay and Madea franchise creator Tyler Perry would be collaborating on producing an original psychological thriller entitled I Am Yours for Paramount Pictures. Originally scripted on spec by Ryan Belenzon and Jeffrey Gelber, and later revised by Bryan Edward Hill, the film — in the vein of Fatal Attraction — concerns an up-and-coming singer-songwriter who cheats on his wife with a groupie. He believes ignoring the woman will help him move on from his mistake, but when she begins stalking him, he realizes that his problems won't go away that easily. Bay would be producing through his Platinum Dunes shingle, alongside Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, while Perry would be producing through his Tyler Perry Studios banner. Presumably, Perry's production partners Mark E. Swinton, Will Areu and Michelle Sneed would serve as executive producers. However, no further news would ever come of the project. In the year 2000, it was announced that New Line Cinema had acquired the rights to develop a feature film adaptation of author Dave Eggers' acclaimed memoir A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, which chronicles his stewardship of his younger brother Toph following the cancer-related deaths of their parents. Eggers himself met with visionary filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson about potentially adapting the novel into a film. Two years later, it was reported that the film would be produced by the now-disgraced Scott Rudin, with About a Boy and High Fidelity author Nick Hornby penning the screenplay. New Line hoped to keep the budget low enough to be able to finance and produce the project themselves, and in case that didn't work out, the studio was open to partnering with Paramount Pictures — which was where Rudin was housed at — or their own sister company Warner Bros. Pictures. A year later, Universal Pictures had acquired the rights from New Line, having set D.V. DeVincentis to revise the script — having previously had a hand in adapting High Fidelity — and filmmaker Kimberly Peirce, in what was to be her next film following the critically acclaimed Boys Don't Cry. However, the project would ultimately never come to be, as the studios' option on the rights to the film had ran out, as confirmed by Eggers in a 2007 interview with Entertainment Weekly.
