Man sentenced to life imprisonment for defiling his wife’s 9-year-old niece in Ondo.
An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure, has sentenced a man, Sunday Oluwafemi, to life imprisonment for defiling his wife's 9-year-old niece, who was said to have been living with the couple.
The convict was said to have been arrested by policemen in the state for committing the offence in Akure in 2019. He was later charged to court and arraigned before on one count of rape.
According to the charge, the convict committed the offence on November 24, 2019, at about 4:pm in Akure, contrary to Section31(1) of the Child’s Right Law, Laws of Ondo State, 2012 and Sections 218 and 257 of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State 2006.
After a series of arguments in court proceedings on the matter, the judge, Justice Yemi Fasanmi, held that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt that the convict committed the offence.
“The confessional statement of the defendant, both written and oral, with that of the medical doctor showed without equivocation that he indeed committed the offence,” the judge ruled.
“The defendant has betrayed the victim’s trust in him, looking at him as a father and also the trust of his brother-in-law who saw him as a good guardian. The evidence of the charge was corroborated as there were several penetrations into the vault of the victim’s vaginal.
“I, therefore, hold that the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant had sexual intercourse with the victim severally and it was not consensual. The mandatory provision is that once a defendant is found guilty of rape, he is liable to life imprisonment.
"Based on the above reasoning and in strict adherence to the provisions of the law, I have no alternative than to sentence the defendant to life imprisonment and I so hold. The sole issue for determination is resolved in favour of the prosecution. He is convicted as charged and sentenced to life imprisonment.”

We don’t have enough paper to print new naira notes — CBN.
The governor of the CBN Godwin Emefiele, has said the apex bank does not have the capacity to print adequate new naira notes. Premium Times reports that Emefiele made the disclosure on Friday, February 10, when he briefed the emergency meeting of the National Council of State.
According to the report, Emefiele said that the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc (The Mint), suffers capacity constraints, resulting in the failure to print adequate new notes to replace the old ₦200, ₦500 and 1,000 notes.
“The Mint has run out of papers to print ₦500 and 1,000 notes. They have placed orders with a German firm and De La Rue of the UK (for papers) but they have been placed on a long waiting list, so their orders cannot be met now.
The Mint had received CBN’s request to print 70million copies of the new notes, totalling ₦126billion to be pumped into circulation by today (yesterday), The Mint doesn’t have the capacity,” a source said.

The suspended assistant superintendent of police, Drambi Vandi has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Lagos-based female lawyer, Raheem Bolanle.
The suspended cop was arraigned on one count of murder before the Lagos State High Court, Tafawa Balewa Square annex, on Monday. After the charge sheet was read to him, Vandi pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.
Raheem was allegedly shot dead by the suspect in the Ajah area of Lagos on Christmas Day. She was returning home from an outing with her family when she was shot.
Raheem’s death sparked outrage from many persons and groups in the country, as they condemned what they described as extrajudicial killing. However, Vandi was arrested and appeared before Chief Magistrate C.A. Adedayo on December 30, 2022, a day after the Police Service Commission approved his suspension.

A middle-aged man identified as Rasaq has been arrested by police operatives in Lagos after he was caught with three human skulls in a sack.
