Israel’s experience in the wilderness, is one that makes us ask the question, ‘Are we content or contentious?’ God had delivered the people from slavery in Egypt. He had delivered them from Pharaoh’s army and protected them as they crossed the Red Sea. But were the people content?
It was at this early juncture in their journey that God made a conditional promise. If they would listen to him, and keep his word, then they would not have to endure all the diseases of Egypt. Are we content or contentious, in knowing that God is our healer? Do we trust the one that forgives our sin, redeems our life, and restores our health? For like the ancient Israelites, God is now leading his children through a wilderness, and our wilderness has many similar challenges. Will we be content or contentious?
Do you treasure the true gospel of the kingdom, as the pearl of great price, valuing the gospel as something exceedingly precious? Are you able to discern the true gospel from the man false gospels? There are many secular and religious “gospels” that allure people into giving their time and heart to false messiahs, with their deceitful gospels. Paul tells us to beware of these false gospels.
The Messiah’s Message for Chanukah
During the festival of Dedication in Jerusalem the religious leaders were asking, Jesus, “Are you the Messiah?” Though they had witnessed many miracles and heard Jesus’ teaching, they did not believe. They were unwilling to listen, learn, and follow the Messiah. They plotted to kill Jesus, accusing him of blasphemy, because he said he was the son of God. What was Jesus' message for them and for us?
Pentecost is only a week away. It is a special anniversary that speaks to people who are empowered by the spirit of the Lord.
Over 3500 years ago, the Lord spoke the ten commandments to millions of the assembled Israelites from the top of the mountain in the midst of the lightning and thunder.
He had delivered the tribes from slavery and the polytheistic Egyptian religious traditions that were useless. His first command was for the people to know and worship the Lord, the one true God. However, they lacked the spirit of the Lord to help them follow through on their promises to follow the Lord and keep his commandments. So as followers of the Lord today, are we enjoying the freedom that comes when the spirit empowers us to obey God?

Isaiah’s Prophetic Message
In poetic language and metaphor Isaiah expressed the message of the Feast of Trumpets the Day of Reckoning. It is a sobering warning to everyone for all time, but most importantly to the leaders who dictate political, social, economic, and military policy. No matter who you are or where you are, God is promising to cut down the proud and the arrogant. He will destroy the great economic system – their magnificent ship of state – along with the builders. Much later the apostle John wrote a similar vision in the book of Revelation. John revisited this theme of the Feast of Trumpets the Day of Reckoning when he scribed the message, “The great Babylon is fallen, fallen…” He recorded God’s judgment against the elite rulers of the world who had built a life of luxury on the backs of those they had enslaved. They would fall in a day and be brought to ruin in a single hour. And the merchants of the world who had profited from this tyrannical but profitable system would mourn its destruction. But why would God judge them so harshly?
Is an understanding of the everlasting covenant mere esoteric knowledge, or a minor twig of understanding on the tree of life? Jeff explores the scriptures and explains how the covenant relates to our understanding of salvation and our relationship with Christ. It is vital knowledge but few understand it.
What is the Judeo-Christian ethic? To the extent North America and the West World have flourished over the last 400 years or so, it has been because our society has been nourished and guided by a commonly shared Judeo-Christian morality and ethics that were solidly rooted in the bible — our Western World’s all-time best seller.
When the apostle Paul wrote to the Thessalonians that “the mystery of lawlessness was already at work,” he was confirming that the things Jesus had prophesied were already coming to pass within decades after Christ’s death. Later, John’s writings confirm that John also had to confront the false teachers who were preaching a gospel of “anomia/lawlessness” and leading many away from the truth. And what of our time? What is the reality in most of the Christian world, when it comes to teaching about God’s law; must we be aware and wary of the anti-nomians, those who teach, “anomia?”
When Miracles are not Enough
Are you looking for a miracle to bolster your faith? The sad reality is that miracles are not enough. Paul made this reality very clear in writing to the brethren at Corinth. They had made an amazing transformation by accepting the biblical message and rejecting their pagan roots. As a result, they were now 'spiritual Jews' and the children of Abraham through baptism, even though gentiles by birth. But Paul had a warning for them and for us. He reminded them of the history of their ancestors, the Israelites in the wilderness. And Paul explained the pitfalls that tripped them up, even though they had seen God's amazing deliverance. It was evident that the miracles were not enough. For intimate personal experience with God's miracle working power did not transform the people or build their faith. So what is the lesson for us?

Does God care about the festivals we celebrate in his honour? The scripture outlines Holy Days that are commanded, but what about other days that are not commanded? Does God leave the decision-making up to us? What criteria should we use in deciding what we should or should not celebrate? Are Christmas and Chanukah both festivals of light?
