MHMD [04] Coins & Inscriptions suggest "Muhammad" was 1st used by Christians!
To really know what was happening in the 7th century, one needs to go back to that century and look at the artifacts from that time; particularly those which are strong and durable enough to exist even today; namely rock inscriptions and metal copper coins. They don't disintegrate, nor deteriorate; and moreover, they have a story to tell.

So, Mel has done just that and in this episode introduces one rock inscription and two copper coins which suggest quite strongly that the name "Muhammad" was used by Christians in the 7th century to refer to Jesus Christ.

He begins by pointing to a 523 AD Jewish rock inscription from Yemen which had written on it (in the southern Sabaic script), the name of MHMD when referring to God as the "Highly Praised One".

This is the common Arabic title which is attributed to the word MHMD, but in this 6th century reference it referred distinctly to Jesus Christ as God.

Later in the 7th century a famous and now quite popular coin (we have used to it quite often in the past on Pfanderfilms) depicts the image of Muawiya, the first Umayyad Caliph on the front holding a cross with another cross sitting atop his head, proving that he was a good Christian who ruled from 661 AD - 680 AD.

But this coin continued to be used up to and including 691 AD, and on the back side is written the letter "M" which noted how much it was worth, with another cross above it, proving that whoever issued this coin was a Christian.

What's curious is that beneath the 'M' are the four letters "MHMD" in Arabic, which is pronounced "Muhammad", which when translated means "The Praised One" or "The Desired One", or even "The Anointed One".

Many Muslims are claiming today that this reference to MHMD on this coin proved that this had to be their prophet Muhammad!

Yet, how could this 'Muhammad' be their prophet of Islam with 3 crosses on it, since there is a Tradition reported by al-Waqidi which said that if ever Muhammad found an object in his house with the mark of a cross on it, he would destroy it (William Muir, "The life of Muhammad", Volume 3, p.61, note 47)?

Furthermore, how could any Muslim ruler have himself pictured holding a cross, the quintessential Christian symbol right down through the centuries, with the accompanying title MHMD on the same coin, unless of course these four letters were not a name but a title referring to Jesus Christ as "the praised one"?

To underline that point Mel then presented another coin, this time again with the letters "MHMD", but with a fish emblazoned above it.

For anyone who knew their history, the symbol of the fish was a Christian symbol, used by the early Christians as a secret symbol during the Roman persecutions to help Christians at that time identify who they were secretly to other Christians.

No Muslim would dare use that symbol, but a good Christian would.

These 2 copper coins and the Rock Inscription suggest pretty clearly that the title "MHMD" in the 6th and 7th centuries was used by Christians before Muslims then borrowed that title and turned it into a name for their prophet possibly in either the late 7th century, or the early 8th century, proving once again that the earlier Muhammad was not a Muslim but more-than-likely a Christian, and most likely JESUS himself.
