Whenever you're looking to get back in shape and start getting fit again it is important to evaluate your circumstances, especially if you've a history of back pain. Even if you're feeling good and not in pain per se, there are common pitfalls you would do well to avoid. No time is getting caught out more likely than the New Year!

With this in mind as you're gearing yourself up for a month or so of hard work to get yourself back in shape we thought it would be helpful to provide a little guidance, with alternatives for you to try if you're someone with a history of back pain.

The typical new year new you workouts are workouts that are high intensity, get your heart rate up, involve a lot of reps, getting sweaty and invariably a good degree of bouncing - not great if you've had back pain.

Equally, not necessary to get the results you want either!

If you've not been doing serious exercise for quite some time there is often an impetus to get into a routine at full throttle. The problem with this is that it just exposes you to injury.

Secondarily, if you've not been doing much to condition your body, there just isn't the need to workout in such a vigorous way. You'll find that getting started with a hard, but sensible workout will be more than sufficient to get seriously good results, without the need for that over-the-top use of jumping, bounding and all round excessive exercises.

The main focus of this video is to help you make sure that if you are getting into a routine of exercise, you do it in a way that minimises the risk of unnecessary injuries.

We know you're making a positive change that your body will thank you for. We also know how to make things work safely! So follow these tips and you'll be in much better place to continue on for weeks and months to come, benefiting from serious compounding results!
